There were some politics as you can imagine. I'd pretty much written NME out of the story by the glossy monthly 80s but as loads of NME ex-staffers were working for R1 by then, they ditched several of my contributors (including A Nightingale) and crowbarred a whole chunk of 90s NME into the script.
I got a fab interview out of Sheryl Garratt too when she was Face editor. Harsh editorial choices were made bcos Face wasn't a music mag. SG told me how Face was the only mag that would say fuck off we'll put an unknown model on there instead if a record company got bolshie about front cover rights
My editorial line by mid 90s was that the weekly inkies were pretty much done (I still think that) and the rock emphasis has shifted to Q Mojo Select etc. I included the eds of MixMag and Kerrang to show that agendas had moved on too and not everyone subscribed to rock's canonical idea of itself.
