@perfors.net that’s some fancy shit

Out of office message until Aug 17! Longest vacation in a decade and first actual vacation in four years. You owe no loyalty to a corporation. Use all your time and join a union!
Just guest edited a PNAS article -- a posh experience. Unaccustomed to people being helpful with anything.
#DIBLives Antarctic explorer Tom Crean (d. #OTD 1938) spent more time in the Antarctic than Scott or Shackleton; he was awarded the Albert Medal and the Polar Medal with 3 Antarctic clasps. The Crean Glacier in South Georgia and Mount Crean in Antarctica are named for him. www.dib.ie/biography/cr...

This switch wiring makes no sense whatsoever. Two switches powering one old ceiling fan in the same receptacle with electricity generated by a water wheel and a mule wired serially with only one ground wrapped around itself. These old houses man
Here's an ambiguous apostrophe situation from Orson Wells Paul Masson wine ads -- We will sell no wine before its/it's time. Whis is it?
I did it. I removed Outook from all my devices and am synched to One Calendar. That slight delay/chore of me having to access email through a browser has made a huge difference in cutting my email addiction. I check that just a few times a day now
I would estimate that less than 3% of emails bring me any pleasure or are helpful. Yet all day I check email. It’s time to break free. Does anyone have recommendations for how they tamed this addiction?
I was thinking of interesting character arcs in film and books over my coffee this morning. One fun one was Armand in S1 of the White Lotus -- how methodically he went completely off the rails. Who are your favs? Jack Nicholson in the Shining, Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven come to mind as big arcs
Imagine trying to run a pupillometry study on a goat eye. All our mathematical models of the pupil are spherical. I’ll just bust loose with a rectangle
I'm so tired of being a professor. I heard a great NPR interview on being a goat farmer and making goat cheese. I might get a goat or a million goats and a farm in the poconos. @blueheronfarm.bsky.social
I've never felt worse than reading decision letters from papers I've submitted to JML.
What makes some stimuli more memorable than others? In a new paper w/ @davogelsang.bsky.social, we show that the magnitude of a stimulus's ANN representation predicts both image and word memorability Stimuli that activate more features, more strongly, leave a stronger memory trace Out now in JML⬇️

My copy of Luria’s Higher Cortical Functions in Man arrived. Great chapter on cerebral localization and history. My prudence area is tingling. People literally believed that high level cognition occurred in the ventricles - for 1500 years

RIP Sam Neill — dead calm, hunt for red October, Jurassic park - so many classics. He was awesome. His American accent was shite but it made him even more likable
Skylight is in! My art studio demo/reno is really coming along. I moved gas lines, braced a sagging ceiling, pulled down walls, wired in lights — armed only with YouTube. No casualties and so far so good
I get that we're falling behind, but it doesn't help that the AAAS is using Excel plots w/ Calibri.
