Their Rental, Our Voice

there's a lot of value to good reviews, too! most renters have at least one bad experience, whether it be unmaintained property, expensive rent hikes, unresponsive landlords, etc. it's a lot harder to find an affordable place with no issues & a good landlord let's help each other find those places

for what it's worth, good reviews might be more valuable for other users than bad reviews. it's a lot harder to find a good landlord than it is to find a bad one

people "have money", in that they have income. but the number of people seriously burdened by their rent is the highest it's ever been. the cost of living is so much worse than it was a decade or two ago. I know multiple people making the most money they've ever made who are barely hanging on.

This is a rehash of the vibecession debates but median household income adjusted for inflation hit a record in 2024 (2025 data will be released in September). It’s just *not true* in any objective sense that people don’t have money anymore. It may *feel* that way but that’s different from reality.

Boston remains the 3rd most expensive rental market in the United States for a one-bedroom apartment, with a median monthly rent of $2,900. Only New York City ($4,560) and San Francisco ($4,180) are more expensive.

My first apartment in 1994 was $350/month. Adjusting for inflation, that apartment should now rent for $744/month. It actually rents for $1500. Greed and inflation are hurting the kids, not their Starbucks lattes.

"Rent-stabilized portfolios in or at risk of foreclosure give tenants outsized leverage to fight for the ownership of our homes. "Rather than addressing distress through deregulation and rent hikes, organized tenants can chart a new course by taking these homes out of the private market for good."

But We Can’t Stop There.”. There is so much more to be done to seize power from landlords and real estate directly. The Chicago City Council must do the right thing for tenants -- not just landlords. If not, hard-working Chicagoans will face excessive rents and unfair evictions, which will result in more homelessness.

Chicago renters’ rights are at stake in dueling City Hall proposals

A potential, first-in-a-generation rewrite of Chicago's renters rights ordinance boils down to two different plans sure to impact the city's 600,000-plus renters.
