The only *guaranteed* piece of craft advice I can give -- I mean the advice that is universally applicable -- is that if you kill many other writers and eat their scribere gland (roughly the size of a black-eyed pea, so be careful not to damage it) then your prose will improve immensely

often when the accusation is that i am in a clique, it's that i have a group of friends and i don't want to expand that group. but i am not obligated to be everyone's friend.
throughout my life i have been accused of being both a bully and being in a clique and no one has ever been able to explain what they mean by that, to the point that i no longer take this criticism seriously.
i find that people often accuse me of being a bully when i state my feelings plainly and clearly, or when i respond to disrespect.
Oh excellent point!! Preordering is also a financial risk. Keep an eye on the promised shipping timeline. If estimated shipping falls 6+ months after payment, that's too late to dispute a charge if your zine never ships.
we were fortunate that our contributors were very understanding throughout the process and our customers were patient. well, most of them. some asked for a refund given how long production took and rightfully so. a zine taking over a year to ship is not normal at all, even in this climate
This is all so important though. I've been in zines with mods who are genuinely good people but totally inept at running a zine. Or, the other way around, great at running zines, but treat people terribly. Neither will result in a good zine experience!
I'm actually going to use this as a jumping-off point for a more general thread on zines. I think a lot of us writers and artists see a zine application as one-way evaluation, where the mods judge our work & decide if we're a fit for the project. But the evaluation needs to go both ways. (1/?)

Back in 2023, Cym/Kroalias signed up to be the finance and shipping mod for dozens of physical zines and then did not ship what people had paid for. The money went missing and much of it has still not been paid back.
on the bright side it is looking like i'm updating on monday. I',m almost done, and probably would have been done last night if i hadn't passed out
