Attorney (not yours!). Views & opinions are mine, not my employer's. Formerly a grad student in Disability Studies and even more formerly a publishing underling. Disabled/chronically ill. Here for books, knitting & convos re: disability. She/her.

I could use good vibes and crossed fingers over the next couple of weeks while I wait to hear about an opportunity, if people have good vibes and crossed fingers to spare!

Finished WICKHILLS this weekend and you should all read it. It's smart, it's clever, and feels both familiar & novel! Note: if you get a shingles vaccine prior to reading you may have fever dreams that you are in the vigilante spy group trying to save the city. It will get *weird* (complimentary)

AND ALSO I had a book come out THIS VERY TUESDAY! How can that be?! Would love to see folks picking up WICKHILLS -- a ? magical Cold War fantaspionage in a magical city ? I don't know -- but, you know, without blowing your cover. Cover illo by the amazing Tom Roberts! 🤩

Finished Premee Mohamed's new novel, Wickhills, over the weekend. It was fantastic! Go pick it up and start reading immediately. I've started Penelope's Bones by historian Emily Hauser, on the women of the Bronze Age. And I'm really looking forward to starting Oyinkan Braithwaite's Cursed Daughters

just finished rereads of the Clocktaur War & Swordheart as preliminary to reading Daggerbound (DO NOT! SAY A WORD TO ME ABOUT THAT BOOK YET) & I'm reading Inventing the Renaissance which is AMAZING, so good, also did not keep me from having to spell out renn- renaissance 2x, WHAT ARE YOU READING???

Reading Wickhills, my first from @premeemohamed.com. There's a lot to love (street lights fly!), but my favorite thing are the chapter openers. They're brilliant & well-crafted. Drop right into new places or with new people, give us just enough to orient & trust us to come along w/o over-explaining

It's a reading weekend this holiday weekend. My copy of @tkingfisher.com's Daggerbound came in this week, but before I dive in to that, I have finished Clockwork Boys and am starting The Wonder Engine. I'm not sure I've ever encountered creatures in books that I love as much as the gnoles!

Tell me something that brought you joy this week. Any old thing will do. Small joys are as good as big ones—sometimes even better.

Folks who have gotten the Shingrix shingles vaccine, did the first one knock you down afterward? Side effects beyond arm pain and fatigue? For how many days?

Eating an empanada for breakfast makes me wish I learned how to make pasties before I moved away from Michigan. Handheld meal encased in dough is a superior meal

Cooking goals today: - zucchini pasta bake that feels like a cheat for lasagna - green goddess dressing from Big Vegan Flavor - Farro cooked in orange juice with garlic oil and herbs, also from Big Vegan Flavor. I have plans to make the pomegranate-glazed tofu later in the week to add to this

Some days trying to chat with strangers falls flat. But today: learned why the empanada guy hasn't been at the market. Met a young woman new to my area who's from a place near my hometown & exchanged numbers. And got great info on where to take a nice walk from a staff person in my building!

What hobbies are we embarking on as fall approaches? I will be baking bread (not sourdough, do not try to convince me) and gathering up my courage to start sewing. Hopefully, the hobby will be the actual sewing, but may end up being the "gathering courage" part

Welp. Thought I found very specific editions of an author's books while trying to avoid the current covers I find...uninspiring. Purchased them from two separate eBay sellers. They arrived today, and both are random terrible covers, not the editions I love that are pictured in the product listings 😤

I'm one of the people who has an absolutely miserable time with the prep, but I've also had more colonoscopies by 30 than most people will have in a lifetime. Even with the bad time I have with the prep, I'll tell anyone, every time to get the colonoscopy

The prep isn't as bad as it used to be -- pills, not the drink -- and you'll have one, uh, busy evening and then you go in and get the greatest nap of your life and then eat a glorious meal. Get yourself checked out.

Friends. I'm not a big film person, but want to know more about what is going on in contemporary movie culture. Are there directors you think of as making films about women (and taking them seriously) as a focus? Greta Gerwig is the person who comes to mind, but there have to be more

The produce at my farmer's market is excellent and I buy as much there as I can before going to the chain grocery store. But what makes going to the farmer's market in DC in summer and getting hot and sweaty just by existing is the empanadas. Have also now learned there's a tamale & taco stall 👀

Hadestown proshot was such a great experience! More proshots please, and I really hope there will be a dvd available for this in addition to streaming. There are only two things I didn't love, and the rest is all praise from me

I'm rereading a book I first read in 2019 as a very locked down manuscript (so no saved copy). I remember really liking it, but apparently I remember absolutely nothing that happened bc I'm going "no way!" & "what?!" as it unfolds. Highly recommend reading something for the 1st time a 2nd time
