It’s been a minute. I’ve had my nose to the grindstone editing my summer 2027 YA novel, THE MERMAID OF WARSAW, a dark retelling of “The Little Mermaid” set during the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. And yes, the mermaid does punch a lot of Nazis…

I’m Jewish. I’ve been to Auschwitz seven times. I’ve been to Dachau, Treblinka, Hadamar, Majdanek, and more mass graves than I care to mention. I’ve worked with Auschwitz Survivors specifically. I’ve spoken to Polish school children about the Shoah. I know what I’m seeing.

Zohran Mamdani doesn’t make me, an American Jew, feel unsafe. Having the Coast Guard, which falls under the Department of Homeland Security, decide that a swastika isn’t really a symbol of hate? That makes me, an American Jew, feel pretty damn unsafe.
