Can we have an agreement that human beings never use the term "load-bearing" unless they are actually engineers discussing something that is needed to hold up a physical thing? As a metaphor let's just leave it to the AIs from here?
Fucking octopuses, man. What a dick. What was it even doing out of the sea...
Octopus broke our wheelchair ramp four months ago but ignored us since
It is deeply shameful that our MPs need saferooms. One of the greatest own goals our country has managed in the last 30 odd years is turning being an MP into an actively unpleasant and now dangerous job.
@danneidle.bsky.social I had an idea for a web app where people design their own tax system, with the twist that they then declare their assets / income and are presented with the option to setup a standing order to the exchequer of whatever extra is owing if their tax system were implemented.
I don’t know how to convince anyone of this, but the hundreds or thousands of words many publications run below the headline aren’t decorative. Often they contain nuance that doesn’t fit into ten words.
Franchises would be a lot easier if people stopped insisting on having so much *change* about the main characters. Bertie Wooster doesn't age or get married. The Famous Five have endless summer holidays. Inspector Morse just keeps on solving crimes in Oxford.
“Verify your age” I was really good at Chuckie Egg and Arcadians.
"Verify your age" I have used a fax machine as a critical part of my job
Knight & Beaumont gone - a real ending of an era. Hope they can produce something amazing to salvage a draw from this test to go out with.
How I'd desalinate the fields I salted, says former chancellor
If you’ve chosen to live in the centre of the greatest city in the world, expect the nightlife to match.
@thetimes.com your puzzles app nags me to turn on notifications every. single. time. I. launch. it. I don't want notifications from a puzzles app. Nobody wants notifications from a puzzles app.
The world desperately needs a washing machine that can either handle tissues in pockets or warn you about them. Or I could learn to check, but after 30 years of adulthood that hasn’t happened, so it seems a forlorn hope.
Britain has a tax on instruments that don’t exist any more. It raises no revenue. It never applies. It was meant to be abolished this year, but wasn't. It still exists. Anyway, I made a chart of all 85 UK taxes.

Sycophantic AI decreases prosocial intentions and promotes dependence

A PhD student at Stanford noticed her classmates were asking Al to write their breakup texts. So she ran a study. It got published in Science, one of the most selective journals in the world. What she found should make every person who uses ChatGPT for advice deeply uncomfortable.

> The earliest surviving edition, dated 2 December that year, opened with the rather uninspiring admission that ‘The new tidings out of Italy are not yet come.’7 The first line in the first surviving English news periodical, then, was an admission that there wasn’t any news. From The Blazing World
As far as I can recall I’ve only ever been to two gigs. U2 & Scouting for Girls.
Everyone is trying way too hard to be cool with the ten bands thing. Let’s hear the ten least cool bands you’ve seen live, cowards
Case in point: the average branch of Lidl made just £130 a day profit last year. Average that up across a lot of stores and it's a nice profit – but it's *blatantly* not profiteering.
Apple’s Find My routinely lies. It shows items as With you now when they aren’t and haven’t been for ages. Just completely misleading.
It's a mark of how mad we all went during lockdown that I wrote a P.G. Wodehouse/Harry Potter crossover: "Expelliarmus, Jeeves!" Quite pleased with the bit about the toilet brush. robertsaunders.wikidot.com/expelliarmus...
If only he’d had the opportunity to do these things. Been Chancellor of the Exchequer or Prime Minister or something.
Rishi Sunak: voters are furious, here’s how to fix the system
The snookering in tight frames has been shite so far this final #WorldSnookerChampionship
Richard III did it. Of _course_ he did it.
Fun game for the historians in the house! What’s a thing you’ve changed your mind about, not through research or a new find, but just through living? Mine is: I now absolutely do believe that the Nazis were always going to open a second front against the Soviets no matter what.
