Requisite Tony Judt quote about the single greatest institutional achievement in 250 years of the Republic:
u.s. public universities are great and it's kind of a shame so many legislators have decided they hate them

In that photo, it looks like Trump is dating the censored Epstein files.
One America, where sociopathic couples opportunistically use each other to get money/power with icy distance. Another America, where affectionate couples actually love each other and enjoy each other's company.
The Trump administration is trying to gut one of the strongest laws protecting tribal sacred sites, burial grounds, and ancestral lands. Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act has worked since 1966. Now a handpicked Council voted to rewrite it..in one week. Here's what at stake.👇
An amazing public service! Adding to my syllabus now!
I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

AI labs buy, scan, shred millions of rare books
If you have retreated to physical books because the internet is too full of AI slop, bad news — now they’re shredding the books to feed their AI slop machines.

Informative article by an established author about not using AI in your writing, as well as not in your publishing ("Don’t incorporate ‘AI' into any part of your publishing process, either: Don’t use ‘AI' editing, don’t use ‘AI' art, don’t use ‘AI' translation…") #writers #writing #AI
I've written a longer piece on the book that's been pulled due to "AI" use allegations, what that means particularly for newer authors, and what, if anything writers can do in the "AI" era to prove their work is their own: whatever.scalzi.com/2026/07/31/a...
Reminder that on his last day of his first term, Trump awarded a commendation to Dr Fauci "in recognition of his exceptional effort on Operation Warp Speed"
We need to trust historians for history, real museum experts for museums, librarians for libraries, and teachers for schools. The idea of trusting the world's most determined liar to tell the truth about our history is beyond laughable. #Museums #Libraries #Education #History
“The bequest is for the benefit of mankind. The government of the [U.S.] is merely a trustee to carry out the design of the testator.” “The will makes no restriction in favor of any particular kind of knowledge.” Page from my copy of the Smithsonian Annual Report for the year 1861.

The White House didn’t weigh scientific merit or alleged noncompliance of grant terms when they cut billions in life-saving research, they just looked for words they didn’t like. Blue states were specifically targeted for defunding.
A reminder that UC _faculty_ and Faculty Associations — not the universities themselves nor their administrators — are waging this battle in court, demonstrating great bravery and moral clarity.
How do you measure "earn more money"? In the early years after my university education, I made low wages in an editorial job, and then made a meager living as a freelancer. Eventually I did very well, and I like to think what I've done means more to me and a few others than, say, me as a banker.
If an undergraduate program's graduates don't earn more than workers who never went to college, that program could be cut off from federal student loans. But is a degree just about making more money?
Probably more helpful to think of them not so much as “Canadian wildfires” but rather “climate change wildfires currently consuming Canada”
I want people to understand the full impact of the devastation that First Nations in Canada are facing. It's NOT just that people and wildlife are losing their homes...it's the history that is being lost for generations to come.

I have just seen the appalling SLOP of a Google ad that asks "what if Jefferson, Adams, & Franklin had had our AI products when writing the Declaration of Independence?" What I hate most may be its assumption that the 3 were worrying about getting through the task EFFICIENTLY, time being money, &c.
