Heading up to mountains tomorrow to continue working a case. Altitude 8-9,000 ft - girl’s gonna need to buy oxygen while up there. Last trip, I felt Bad at that elevation, no can do again. At least we’ll escape the heat for a few days. Probably gonna visit Drive By Pie 🤣 🥧

Small white building with sign in red letters: Drive By Pie

Been thinking about this small porcelain owl for months, sad that maybe I’d lost it forever (years ago, Native American woman at reservation told me she’d just been diagnosed w/ cancer, gave me this owl, asked me to remember her). Today my husband found it! I almost cried, so happy it’s found.

Porcelain owl painted black and brown.

Silicon Valley, 1989, I interviewed at Oracle (Larry Ellison was CEO). Interviewer picked up my large sample manual: “How long to write this?” Me: “Three months, worked with engineers from inception to product.” Interviewer: “We write a manual a week. Can you do that?" Larry Ellison’s Oracle. Ugh.

Son of Larry Ellison. Wicked family. People following the early days of Oracle have known since the '90s. Vicious snakes and hostile takeovers.

Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

Shopped at Arab market in nearby town. Almost everything lower-priced (some significantly, like meat). Olives, dates, dried apricots & other stuff purchased by the pound (I transfer some to glass jars). Dates (in the middle) are so fresh! Making date bars soon. #GroceryPrices

Food from a local Arab market (from L to R): Bulgarian Sheep Milk cheesse, Castelvetrano olives, dates, white cherry jam, dried apricots, Halloumi cheese, Kalamata olives.

Pitched an article idea to a publisher I’ve written for in the past…& wrote the wrong publication name (as in, wrote the name of their Main Competitor). Oops 😮 Wrote back, apologized, said I knew I was pitching to them & wasn't pitching elsewhere. I think I’ve done enough pitching for today 😆

Informative article by an established author about not using AI in your writing, as well as not in your publishing ("Don’t incorporate ‘AI' into any part of your publishing process, either: Don’t use ‘AI' editing, don’t use ‘AI' art, don’t use ‘AI' translation…") #writers #writing #AI

I've written a longer piece on the book that's been pulled due to "AI" use allegations, what that means particularly for newer authors, and what, if anything writers can do in the "AI" era to prove their work is their own: whatever.scalzi.com/2026/07/31/a...

Aaron Gordon ate some duct tape. We figured out it wasn’t much (thank God), fed him olive oil on bread (per internet), called vet who said good on Olive Garden approach, now feed him dog food + water & he’ll poop it out in the morning. AG’s fine. We’re a bit frazzled 😜 #Rottweiler #DogsOfBluesky

Heard from son (in France) today. They have smoky skies & falling ash but fortunately fires are ~3 hours away. He said nearby medieval castles & abbeys, made of stone, are charred, but otherwise unaffected. (Now I can’t stop thinking of medieval castles 🏰) Daughter-in-law & grandsons ❤️ #Family

Good news, gave me a boost (Longmont’s “up the highway” from us). They grow veggies; raise ducks, geese & chickens. Have learned to plant, weed & harvest around solar panels’ metal supports - plus the structures create microclimates that let a variety of plants flourish. #Colorado #SolarPanelFarm

Whoa 🤯 in Slow-Mo@0lsi.bsky.social · last wk.

@theguardian.com 🇺🇸 A new 3,000-panel #solar power farm in Colorado is cooling the land and turning a profit as local farmers raise #crops and #livestock. The microclimates of the solar array also keep fresh berries and vegetables from scalding in the summer heat.
