Parents! What's the WORST swearword you'd be comfortable with your 8-12 year old reading in a story? Where do we stand on "arse"? (please be as prissy as you like, I'm trying to balance "word I want to use" with "can I be arsed with the complaints"?)

New article from our group! Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Beyond Pathogens: Mobile Genetic Elements We argue for the need to include MGEs in our AMR surveillance programs, and provide lots of information on tools and databases available to support that

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

I mean, you might feel the need for a break from the Odyssey? Odysseus certainly did And a potato is unlikely to incur the wrath of gods or monsters in the at that cows and sheep might (not that I am suggesting anyone EAT the potato—in fact nobody eat the potato)

NB book with 3 fucks is (as anyone who knows me probably guessed) All Systems Red Fucks per book increased through the Murderbot Diaries series & I was happy to continue reading them aloud Max book count is System Collapse (94 fucks) max density Platform Decay (92 fucks, shorter book)

A duck density graph of The Murderbot Diaries making a bold prediction for the final book in the series (book nine)
Fuck density is fucks per word count then multiplied by 100,000 to give a “human number”

I read my ten year old a book with three “fucks“ in it—if you’re reading aloud then you can surprise your child with your ability to use the word fuck (and believe me, my children were so surprised the first time they heard me say “oh my god” since I rarely swear!) The book was superb 1/

I do think that tolerance for swearing is quite individual? Because I like to read books aloud to my children I am very aware of the swear levels of books One thing I find hard to read is pseudo swears—I am with Dorothy Parker 3/3

Quote from Dorothy Parker:
So, you're the man who can't spell
'fuck."
Dorothy Parker to Norman Mailer after publishers had convinced Mailer to replace the word with a euphemism,
'fug,' in his 1948 book, "The Naked and the Dead.

Bluesky oldheads will remember that brief period of time when the conservative trolls tried to storm the place and were flummoxed by the idea they would have to organically grow an audience and that someone who didn't want to talk to them could nuke every interaction they ever had from orbit

Bluesky is a "liberal bubble" because fascist chuds can't get traction without algorithmic assistance and because people here trained themselves to block "debate me" trybois the instant they roll up

Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider on the platform's reputation for being a liberal bubble: "Yes, we definitely want that to change. It is already changing. It certainly wasn’t designed to attract one specific group of people."

I'm a full Professor of Immunology and fully vaccinated. I didn't get vaccinated out of obedience, but after decades of studying the immune system and evaluating all evidence. Calling that "lack of critical thinking" is not an argument. It's ideology masked as pretend intellect.
