Parents! What's the WORST swearword you'd be comfortable with your 8-12 year old reading in a story? Where do we stand on "arse"? (please be as prissy as you like, I'm trying to balance "word I want to use" with "can I be arsed with the complaints"?)

Vaccine advocate, ducks, Murderbot… She/her
Hahahahahaha I wanted to type something here but I'm laughing too hard "could you still get through an entire workday" what the fuck, man, you just sharpied "I am incompetent" on your forehead.
My answer is LOL ROFL (dickbrain) The terminally AI-pilled can't even *imagine* some people have *never* asked stochastic parrots to cheat at their job for them.
New article from our group! Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance Beyond Pathogens: Mobile Genetic Elements We argue for the need to include MGEs in our AMR surveillance programs, and provide lots of information on tools and databases available to support that

Purpose of Review Antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) are often transmitted among microbes via mobile genetic elements (MGEs), but few antimicrobial resistance (AMR) surveillance programs incorporat...

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.
This man (not Ben!) literally believes that his shit does not stink…
Oh my god the dietician who is telling everyone in the White House to only eat steak and sauerkraut doesn't wipe his ass.

I mean, you might feel the need for a break from the Odyssey? Odysseus certainly did And a potato is unlikely to incur the wrath of gods or monsters in the at that cows and sheep might (not that I am suggesting anyone EAT the potato—in fact nobody eat the potato)
I also love the poem: There will come soft rains (1920) There will come soft rains and the smell of the ground, And swallows circling with their shimmering sound; And frogs in the pools singing at night, And wild-plum trees in tremulous white; 1/
Today is the day on which Ray Bradbury's “There Will Come Soft Rains” (pub'd 1950) takes place. It’s a short elegaic story about a smart home slowly dying after its owners are wiped out in a nuclear extinction event. Re-reading it now, I’m feeling softly sucker-punched by what it has to offer us.
Done and done, voted early. If you're a MO voter and you haven't voted yet, VOTE TODAY
Missouri friends: tomorrow is Election Day and I'm sure you already know to vote NO on amendments 4 and 5 to preserve our citizen-led ballot measure process and prevent a huge statewide sales tax hike, but please also vote YES on 1 to preserve an existing tax for parks and conservation too!
I rather liked this display at our local @waterstones.bsky.social The Odyssey (Homer), The Odyssey (Homer) The Odyssey (Watson), The Odyssey (Fry) The Odyssey (Homer), The Odyssey (Homer), KID POTATO (Coslett)
Happy “There Will Come Soft Rains“ Day! Today IS August 4, 2026 🖤🖤🖤
"Today is August 4, 2026." Can't find my copy of The Martian Chronicles to take a photo of the actual published story, but it remains a collection well worth reading 76 years later: bookshop.org/a/862/9781668094853 #books #writing
NB book with 3 fucks is (as anyone who knows me probably guessed) All Systems Red Fucks per book increased through the Murderbot Diaries series & I was happy to continue reading them aloud Max book count is System Collapse (94 fucks) max density Platform Decay (92 fucks, shorter book)
I read my ten year old a book with three “fucks“ in it—if you’re reading aloud then you can surprise your child with your ability to use the word fuck (and believe me, my children were so surprised the first time they heard me say “oh my god” since I rarely swear!) The book was superb 1/
I do think that tolerance for swearing is quite individual? Because I like to read books aloud to my children I am very aware of the swear levels of books One thing I find hard to read is pseudo swears—I am with Dorothy Parker 3/3
Would you like to see an ever so slightly damp Hall? Et voila! The lawn is what we’re calling ‘gold’.
We interrupt your morning ablutions with this important update: IT’S RAINING! We’ll be right back after we’ve had a run around in it. 🤪☔️
If you enjoyed Pluribus, you’ll enjoy this:
Okay, I'm watching Pluribus. THESE FUCKING NERDS. YOU DON'T JUST WHIP UP A BATCH OF SOME UNKNOWN BIOLOGICAL FROM A SIGNAL YOU INTERCEPTED FROM SPACE. WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING.
At some point, she's going to ask for a goddamned nuclear weapon and they're going to give it to her.
Bluesky oldheads will remember that brief period of time when the conservative trolls tried to storm the place and were flummoxed by the idea they would have to organically grow an audience and that someone who didn't want to talk to them could nuke every interaction they ever had from orbit
Bluesky is a "liberal bubble" because fascist chuds can't get traction without algorithmic assistance and because people here trained themselves to block "debate me" trybois the instant they roll up
Bluesky's new CEO Toni Schneider on the platform's reputation for being a liberal bubble: "Yes, we definitely want that to change. It is already changing. It certainly wasn’t designed to attract one specific group of people."

I'm a full Professor of Immunology and fully vaccinated. I didn't get vaccinated out of obedience, but after decades of studying the immune system and evaluating all evidence. Calling that "lack of critical thinking" is not an argument. It's ideology masked as pretend intellect.
@happytoast.co.uk It was Newbury Chalkfest today! I drew a homage to Murderbot—based on the gorgeous Valentine the brilliant HappyToast drew for me to give my spouse this year… I apologise to HT for my poor artwork #murderbot
