Plug-in solar becomes legal on 27 August 2026: the 800W socket rule is law, but no kit is certified yet. The kits on sale are the wrong kits: the specification is PV-only with no storage, while every plug-in kit in UK shops today has a battery in it (EcoFlow STREAM Pro £799 to Ultra X £1,249, observed 24 July 2026). Realistic savings are £40 to £85 a year: 800W makes 650 to 800 kWh, you self-consume 25 to 40% of it without a battery, and you should assume £0 export. Payback 5 to 10+ years. One device per household: 800 VA of inverter output and up to 2,000 W of panels. The per-circuit allowance in the specification is blocked until G98 is amended. Already have roof solar? The 3.68 kW simple-connect limit is cumulative per property, so adding 800W can push the whole house into a formal G99 application taking weeks. The safety evidence is good, the conformity evidence is not: all six kits in the June 2026 government study operated safely, and all six exceeded the Class B emissions limit at full power.

As a creator, and as a leader of a tech company, I have a deep sense of conflict about AI. I feel outrage, but I also feel something else. On social media, though, only the pure outrage floats to the top of our feeds. The truth is that there’s a gap between the unqualified fury I see externally, and the full complexity of my own, internal feelings. I haven’t seen this friction captured or articulated anywhere yet, and I feel a sort of desperate pressure to explain it — not just to you all, but to myself. After months of trying to structure my thoughts, this talk was the result.
