I'M THE BISHOP OF SOUTHWARK. IT'S WHAT I DO. He/him
"he was nice to his friends though" isn't much of a defence for being monstrous elsewhere, especially given that we're all reacting to his public persona. But it's not even particularly true here, either, given he assaulted his pregnant girlfriend.
Did he ever finish those poppadums, does anyone know?
Wow. Jimmy Cricket and Rod Liddle on the same day. Makes you think. Anyway, RIP Jimmy Cricket.
I was disappointed when the Johnny Mnemomic movie came out because it was a bit silly and not as plausible as Gibson should be, but in hindsight it's an awesome piece of cyberpunk retrofuturism!
Gonna watch Johnny Mnemonic while I'm in a Gibson mood. Fun that it's over 30 years old now, and had to downplay the *actual* main character because the rights to Molly had already been sold for a TV or movie adaptation of Neuromancer- which we're not getting until next year...
I’ve never been a book purist when it comes to film and TV adaptations. Work to the strengths of your medium, and if it’s cool it’s cool, right? I do hope the Neuromancer TV show has some awesome dub on the soundtrack though.
Just finished Neuromancer again, been a while so I fancied a refresher ahead of the TV show. What a fucking awesome book that is. Although I think he’s become a better writer as he’s gone on, and Spook Country is still my favourite, though it’s less mindblowing.
Reread a bunch of old-skool cyberpunk over the last couple of years. Sterling had the politics and Shirley had the punk, but Gibson was always the best writer of the three. Neuromancer's very Fleming/Stone, cold and cool, but round about Idoru he turned that into noir poetry.
Most of the way through Neuromancer now, and aside from NOBODY having predicted smartphones and VR never having caught on, pretty much everything still works as a convincing fictional environment apart from the iconic mirrorshades, which… FFS. Awful.
New XTC merch idea- Senses Working Overtime with Lee Anderson gazing lustfully at an undercooked bacon sarnie.
Maybe Nigel meant he was HOLDING a surgery on the day befo- No, that can’t be it.
Replaying Guardians Of The Galaxy, and it really is great. Definitely deserved a sequel.
It’s been like three years since they confirmed John Hillcoat for Blood Meridian so it looks like it’s probably dead again. Hillcoat still seems like the obvious choice, but… maybe give Eggers a crack at it?
Reform pulling all their campaigners from Manchester to fight Binface is hilariously reminiscent of Goebbels pulling troops out of Russia to film Kolberg.
Cockapoos are lovely dogs, but I must admit to often judging their owners for not appreciating just how funny the word is. If you can say it without at least a chuckle you have no soul. Where’s your joie de fuckin vivre?
Given that Capitalism requires both poverty and unemployment to function, you’d think they’d be a bit more gracious to people who are taking one for the team to keep their bullshit system going, really.
Just started a reread of Neuromancer, and it’s kinda funny how the first thing to have obviously aged badly was Russia and the US being enemies, and how it’s gone all the way through dated and ended up being current again…
Talking to my mum the other day and she was telling me about a guy years ago who’d been lowkey trying to come on to her and who was pretty right wing. “Even if I’d been interested, which I wasn’t, I thought there was no way I’d ever be able to introduce him to my son”. So proud.
The heat really can make people do strange things. For example, I've mainly been eating salad this week. Feels vaguely blasphemous.
If I was in Diane Abbott’s position, I’d tweet “Thanks Andy. Fuck you Keith lol” and then join the Green Party.
[mysterious circle of robed figures] Kathleen Stock: dark lord! dark lord! Stock: terrible news!! Stock: the feile en phobail art festival says we can't run our usual genital inspection booth! JK Rowling: WHAT Rowling: thisss iss an outrage!! Rowling: the people LOVE our genital insspection booth!!
Just finished Red Sheet. That was a fuckin BLAST, as always. It might be an explicitly anti-Communist novel, but it’s a damn good one. And Ellroy always slides on charges of copaganda, because his cops are always assholes too.
just in case you wondered how graham is doing lol
I know Blade Runner 2049’s divisive, but I liked it a lot. Point is, I feel now might be the perfect time to restate my case that it’s a little too long, and that you could take out all Jared Leto’s bits without losing much of importance.
Andy Partridge must have been having a very peculiar week.
Neuromancer's currently free on the Kindle store if anyone feels like a refresher before the TV show starts.
Nice. Guardians of the Galaxy's 8 quid on the Playstation store. Already played it on the PC but been meaning to go back because it was super-fun.
