Simon Kővesi@kovesi.bsky.social · 2d agoFour baselines for academic conference attendance: 1) keep to your allocated speaking time. 2) everyone is clever; stand out by being warm & kind. 3) be interested in everyone equally - from postgrad to Prof to conference administrator to catering & hotel staff. 4) in Q&A, ask an actual question.
I think this totally fair, but in exchange I want a personal thank you letter from Clarkson for the £250,000 that his farm got from government subsidies that come from my tax money. I don't want a form letter, I want him to write it like he means it.

My mum (pic 1) would have been 95 today. Her mum (supporting a mini-Lisa walking in pic 2) died on this day in 1987 - yup, my mum's 56th birthday. Mum then died in 1999 on my dad's 75th birthday, which was also their 34th wedding anniversary 🤦🏼♀️😭 (pic 3 as we marked his 80th birthday).
Looking forward to hearing @channel4tv.bsky.social justify this unfathomably reckless and damaging title, let alone anything else. The journalistic equivalent of throwing a hornet's nest into an A&E ward, to 'raise awareness of injuries'.

I work in disability study support. I hate the effect on students + colleagues that 'just asking questions' has after programmes like this. Families who don't want to believe in ADHD, students stuck waiting on diagnoses, doubters feeling emboldened to say "it's a bandwagon". This prog is DANGEROUS.

UKHE - despite all its bosses are doing - has brilliance in research+ teaching, sustains communities+ understanding, and offers opportunities to staff + students that go far beyond the (actually massive) contribution to local employment + development. The losses are human. We keep challenging 💪🏼

The other 3 will then have a month to prepare and find hourly-paid replacements for all the classes across two degrees. And supervise 25 PhDs. Plus admin and pastoral care and research. Management doesn’t care.

Nick Harkaway@nickharkaway.com · 3d agoOn a simple moral level: hey. Guess what? We are, as a country, doing next to nothing to help people whose lives were burned down during the pandemic lockdowns. We are doing very little for Long Covid, for trauma. We are also AFAIK possibly even less prepared for a pandemic now than we were in 2020.
So, yeah. By all means let’s do everything we can for kids (and anyone else) who were damaged by the pandemic. Let’s do that now, today, because we do not have a Time Machine.

But for over two decades my Hums colleagues were in the top quartile for their research contribution to society. History top 10. Now gone with only a national whisper.
Reality check: "Women's hard won rights": - did NOT include defining women by biology, the slogan was "biology is not destiny!" - did NOT seek sex segregation, they fought for inclusion of women - did NOT advocate "sex-based rights", they fought AGAINST that and FOR equality regardless of sex
the thing about doing unprompted apologies instead of just weathering the backlash is that if they were going to sue you anyway, now they have a document you created that admits some level of wrongdoing
