Another day, another public letter condemning the ridiculous and harmful decisions made by our administration... This time, the letter comes from the All Parliamentary Party Group for Music Education, calling out the VC and UEB's push to close our music department.

'Nottingham is one of the largest providers of modern languages degrees in the UK, they note, with 500 students studying languages, and a further 2,000 students enrolled on language courses through its language centre.' Is Parliament gradually waking up to the university crisis? 3/3

Rip Van Winkle, painted by by Thomas Nast (1875). Old, bearded, on naked knees which protrude through his tattered trousers, he stares unhappily at the ground, with trees behind him.

'They add that a counterproposal put forward by the local...[UCU] branch is “credible, academically robust, and a financially sustainable model that would allow Nottingham University to retain a meaningful modern languages presence while delivering the savings required by the university”.' 2/3

Arnold Lakhovsky's paining, The Conversation (c. 1935). Five bearded men sit in a room, three of them in conversation with each other. Humans need languages to have conversations.

I met with @uonucu.bsky.social to discuss the impact on members, the lack of proper scrutiny in this process, and the need for a new funding formula for HE. I am in contact with the university leadership and will continue to push for an outcome that protects as many jobs and courses as possible.

This isn't just a fight for UoN. This is a fight for the future of higher education in the UK and globally. Colleagues from across the country have supported us in our efforts, financially and otherwise. We thank these members and others for their generous donation which will help us keep fighting!

Solidarity works! Colleagues in History, Classics and Archaeology (HCA) at Newcastle have raised £586 for the UCU Nottingham fighting fund in support of members taking strike action against compulsory redundancies. The collection was organised in recognition that what happens at one

I could not have been more honoured than to be asked to do this. Agnes had such a huge impact on so many people in Nottingham. She would be horrified to see what’s happening to the institution she worked so hard for.

"Winning is getting employers to say yes when they want to say no" A massive thank you to @howardstevenson.bsky.social for his wonderful (and wonderfully timely) talk at yesterday's Agnes Flues lecture. The perfect jolt of energy for our ongoing industrial action!
