PhD in public awareness and perceptions of invasive species, University of Stirling

When you sit down in the evening to relax by the telly and find you're still researching people's attitudes towards invasive non-native species... ๐Ÿ˜‚ Interesting to compare the ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง #WildBoar ๐Ÿ— debate to the ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ #FeralHog situation where no pigs ever had native populations! ๐Ÿ– @lastweektonight.com

I've been expanding my understanding of the possibilities of conservation culturomics recently by reading outside my discipline and I have read some "interesting" papers... But I was really impressed by the clarity and transparency of this #HCI research on #SentimentAnalysis of films ๐Ÿ“ฝ๏ธ by Jon Chun ๐Ÿ‘

Disappointing show from the #butterflies at #FlandersMoss this weekend: only 2 small whites & 1 meadow brown in the 4 counts we did ๐Ÿ˜ž Still lots to see, though ๐ŸฆŽ + Fellow environmental scientist, Sophie, & I met a lovely guy, Alasdair, & had a chat about wildlife ID & natural spaces accessibility ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿฆฝ

The Big Butterfly Count 2026 is here and butterflies need our help! ๐Ÿฆ‹ From now until 9 August, spend just 15 minutes outside counting the butterflies you see and help us take nature's pulse. The best part? Anyone, anywhere can take part. Count yourself in ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://butrfli.es/3SVFepj

What an inspiring break in my day! I loved hearing about how Julie connected her ideas about the different places she had experienced, from China to Svalbard... ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ

This week, we were honoured to welcome Julie Forgues to present her letter to #Svalbard, "Dear Svalbard, why did I come back?" about her experiences on an artistic residency in the #Arctic and how #art, science and place are linked ๐Ÿปโ€โ„๏ธ

Really appreciated the chance to talk to Jazz about moving from using stats skills as a tree specialist to using them as a bird specialist ๐ŸŒณ๐Ÿฆ† to discuss teaching roles with Dan Chapman ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ and to speak to other Iapetus PhDs about placements!

Lovely to catch up with other PhD students and friends over brunch today and try out the seasonal apple pie matcha at HBW (although I feel like apple pie is an autumn seasonal flavour, not spring? ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸŒธ)

I wrote in my research notes, when Arthur did his first BES seminar introducing himself in 2024, that I would like to hear more details on his research - and now I have!

This week's internal seminar was a fascinating insight into Arthur Broadbent's #research on understanding the combined effects of winter thawing and summer droughts on #soil fungal communities and carbon storage in the ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡น #Alps ๐Ÿ”๏ธ

Our #PhD forum recently ran a seminar in response to feedback that members of BES would like to know more about what we do! Thanks to everyone who engaged - we had some interesting discussions about interaction through the social committee ๐Ÿป, use of the coffee room โ˜• and the role of remote working ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ’ป

Really enjoyed getting to know Guillaume and finding out about his incredible free diving adventures, as well as contemplating the importance of colonial legacies in global invasive species assemblages in this afternoon's seminar!

Massive thanks to Guillaume Latombe from @edinburghuni.bsky.social for a thought-provoking seminar about #modelling #BiologicalInvasions scenarios and considering what kind of future we want to build to minimise #InvasiveSpecies spread alongside trade and ethical development!
