Given the air pollution in North America, it is worth thinking about the large health impacts on vulnerable populations. In our @nature.com paper @gemmadipoppa.bsky.social and I show that air pollution exposure in the sub continent significantly increases child and infant mortality.
In the final part, we use a meteorological model to isolate the effect of crop burning (from other air pollution factors) on child and infant mortality. A 1-log point increase in pollution exposure from crop burning causes an additional 24 out of 1000 infants to die in their first year of life.
I'm on sabbatical this academic year visiting Bocconi, Milan (Sep-Dec '26) and LSE, London (Jan-June '27). Looking forward to meeting many old friends and colleagues and getting to know new ones!
