A call for papers for Leeds International Medieval Congress 2027 on the topic of 'Ordered and Disordered Communities in Clerical Thought'. This panel examines how medieval clerical and monastic cultures defined communities and situated them within social or religious order. We seek to explore how these cultures understood disorder within or between communities, as well as how their judgements shaped ideas about communal identity and belonging. Communities considered might range from individual institutions to wider social order and communities, across the entirety of Christendom in the Middle Ages.

We welcome proposals from colleagues in any discipline of medieval studies and at any career stage, including postgraduate and early career researchers. Although papers should engage substantively with clerical or monastic understandings of order, they need not be confined to clerical communities or clerically authored sources. Please submit abstracts of up to 300 words for a 20-minute paper, along with a short biography, to Dr Alastair Forbes and Dr Grant Jones at: a.r.e.forbes@durham.ac.uk and grant.jones@durham.ac.uk no later than Monday 14 September 2026.

Constructing Selves, Constructing Communities
What made a medieval self? Augustine’s noverim me, noverim te (“May I know myself; may I know You”)
suggests that knowing oneself depended upon relationships with both God and other people. Taking this insight
alongside Paul Ricoeur’s distinction between idem (sameness) and ipse (selfhood), this panel asks how medieval
people negotiated selfhood through their relationships with communities, institutions, and the divine.
This panel aims to explore how selves and communities were imagined, enacted, negotiated, and transformed
through material culture, texts, language, and social practice. We are particularly interested in the significance of
belonging, memory, and authority in shaping both individual and collective experience.
Papers may consider, among other themes:
• Communities of belonging:
• Embodied and material expressions of selfhood
• Texts, rituals, and discourse: how rhetoric,
narrative, images, and language mediated
relationships between individuals, communities, and
the divine.
• Authority, spaces and social order: how hierarchy,
sacred or social spaces, exclusion, and reputation
structured medieval selves and communities.
We welcome interdisciplinary approaches from across
medieval studies.
We invite submissions of a 150–250 word abstract,
accompanied by: a paper title; a brief personal biography
including your current institutional affiliation (if any) and
academic title (if any); your full contact details (email and phone); any equipment/accessibility requirements
and scheduling requests; and whether you intend to participate in person or virtually.
Submissions must be sent to ceraejournal@gmail.com by 11:59 PM (GMT) Monday 7 September 2026.
All submissions will be reviewed by the Ceræ Committee. Decisions will be communicated to all applicants
within 5 days of the deadline.

We are excited to announce that the Long Middle Ages, a
seminar series for postgraduate students and early career
researchers working on the Late Antique, Medieval, and Early
Modern Periods, will be returning for a second series in Autumn
2026!
We welcome submissions of 30 minute papers from
postgraduates and early career researchers working in any
discipline and on any topic related to the late antique, medieval
and early modern periods. Papers will be followed by time for
questions and further discussion.
Seminars will commence in October 2026 and run on a fortnightly basis
until mid-December.
If you are interested in presenting a seminar, please send an abstract of no
more than 250 words as well as a short biography to the organisers at
thelongmiddleages@gmail.com by Monday 17 August 2026.

All seminars will take place online. If you have any further questions,

Communities in the Long Middle Ages call for papers

Following the success of the Long Middle Ages Seminar Series, hosted at the University of Leeds, we invite proposals for 20 minute papers at the Leeds International Medieval Congress (5-8 July 2027). This will be a space to establish connectivity between scholars working on a variety of disciplines within the traditional boundaries of the late antique, medieval and early modern periods. Considering the Long Middle Ages prompts us to think critically about the continuities and commonalities between historical periods and across disciplines.

We welcome a range of research approaches including traditional methods and interdisciplinary methodologies and frameworks. Speakers are welcome to present their work in any format on historical, literary, archaeological, art historical, linguistic, or any other specialisations under the remit of the Long Middle Ages. Accepted speakers may also be asked to join a roundtable on the topic.

Dynamics of Old English Scholarship in the Long Nineteenth Century: Discoveries, Disputes and the Development of a Discipline

The long nineteenth century (1786–1914) was a dynamic and transformative period for the scholarly study of Old English.
The legacies of nineteenth-century scholarship remain deeply embedded in the study of Old English today. As a result, contemporary scholars must engage not only with early medieval language and literature itself, but also with the intellectual and ideological lenses through which nineteenth-century scholars recovered, edited and interpreted this material.
We hope to bring together a peer-reviewed edited volume with papers on various aspects of the scholarly study of Old English in the long nineteenth century, with an additional focus on European continental
contributions in line with the ERC-project EMERGENCE (‘Early Medieval English in NineteenthCentury Europe’). Proposals for chapter contributions of c. 8000 words are welcome from scholars from all academic backgrounds. First drafts full drafts are due at the end of September 2027.
Possible topics/themes include but are not limited to:
- Discoveries of Old English texts
- Disputes about linguistic or literary interpretations of Old English
- Developments in the discipline of Old English studies
- Personal, religious, political and ideological motivations for the study of Old English
- Biographical contributions about scholars of Old English
- Scholarly correspondence on Old English matters
- Editing and printing of Old English texts
- Teaching of Old English

The Literary Communities of Old Norse and Icelandic Romance
Through the translation of Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia regum Britannaie and the efforts of Hákon Hákonarson, king of Norway (r. 1217-1263), romance reached the Medieval North where it soon took hold of the Scandinavian imagination. Old Norse translations of Old French romances were copied and transmitted from Norway to Iceland. These romances soon inspired a wave of new literary creations, leading to the production of Icelandic chivalric romances and later ballads and rimur, alongside potentially influencing other literary genres. These narratives were amongst the most popular stories read and received amongst medieval and later Icelandic communities as the manuscript preservation attests. And yet they continue to be amongst the most understanded communities of texts within Old Norse literary studies. This session seeks to respond to this gap in scholarship and invite papers which investigate these texts, challenging former assumptions and opening up new avenues of scholarship on these texts.

Suggested themes and topics may include but are not limited to:
