I wrote an update on the dispute with Ruby Central over Bundler and RubyGems. I'm sad it's reached this point, especially since Ruby Central's conferences are a big part of what convinced me to join the Ruby community back in the day. andre.arko.net/2026/07/30/rub…
Ruby Central's Destructive Legacy
At conferences and meetups, and in conversations online, many Ruby developers have asked me about Ruby Central and my disagreement with them. This post is my attempt to answer the questions I’ve been getting over and over, covering: 1) what is Ruby Central doing now? 2) has the dispute over Bundler…

LRT: learning to ride a bike as an adult was one of the most meaningful and life changing things to happen to me. i love bikes so much, and being able to ride one has made me enjoy life more. i love the feeling of freedom it gives me! i've had so many fun adventures on bikes
riding bikes is also vastly more pro social than driving a car. you pay so much more attention to the world around you and are so much better enmeshed in your community.
Riding bikes is 10X more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities. And that’s just the climate emissions. Doesn’t include the massive public & personal cost difference, the air & noise pollution difference, the massive space difference, etc, etc…Via @theconversation.bsky.social
i'm at siggraph for the next few days! anyone else i know attending?
a friend told me that i'm the most anti-ai person she knows and you know what? i'm very honored
For your convenience, the Pride and Prejudice live-posting super-thread 📚
So I’ve started Pride and Prejudice, and already I feel bad for Mrs Bennet.
just saw a truck drive over the barrier that was set up to prevent vehicles from being in the bike lane in order to park in the bike lane 🙃
so the thing about luddites is they recognized that sometimes technical innovations are used to consolidate power and exercise additional control over labor here's your new mechanical loom! great huh - but too expensive for YOU to own ofc. it'll be owned by some rich dude. BUT you can rent it! wow
George Lucas likens AI sceptics to luddites clinging to horses and carts
one of my issues with trying to sleep early is that it's kind of like a meeting—when i have a meeting scheduled, i can't get anything done until after the meeting bc i feel sure that if i jumped into something i'd hyperfocus on the thing and lose track of time and then miss the meeting
most murders are committed by someone the victim knows - a partner, neighbor etc. but in cases where there is no relationship between murderer & victim? the killer is a cop about a third of the time. if you are killed by a stranger, there is a 1 in 3 chance that stranger is a cop.

‘One-third of all Americans killed by strangers are killed by police.’

does anyone else get overstimulated by discord? i try to join communities and then just get overwhelmed.
over the past few days i've gotten so much value out of watching brandon sanderson's online lectures about his writing process
lol even after being tired the whole day my brain comes to life at 1am 🙃
walked home from a dinner yesterday and love island was playing on someone's tv in one of the houses i walked past—and immediately felt kinship with them
was thinking that i don't feel much excitement once i finish designing a project, bc next is the manufacturing stage. that stage is so much back & forth & following up; it takes forever & feels like torture. then i remembered i have the following up disease. of course manufacturing is hard for me

my college reunion reminded me that college was when i had the most friends i've ever had. also, my various friend groups had lots of conflict. i miss that time a lot & it's also a reminder of how human interactions are complicated & messy. i think there's no avoiding mess when getting close to ppl
i'm in a few creative discords and one thing that i've noticed about community is that a lot of people are more interested in getting support than giving support people who post their art or writing hoping for comments/advice/feedback, but don't comment/give feedback to others
ao3 being one of the nicest websites to interact with right now (no ads, no infinite scroll, mostly nice commenters plus helpful moderation tools) is definitely contributing to writing fanfic being my current favorite creative outlet
went to my college reunion last week and felt relieved that all my friends who studied CS with me all hate LLMs and genAI as much as i do 😭
so fed up by how ads creep into every form of communication and make it nearly unusable for communication with other people—mail, phone calls, emails, texts, social media
trying an experiment—i'm not turning on my lights when it gets dark at night and trying to make myself get sleepy by natural light. i notice i get sleepy at a reasonable hour when i go camping or experience the sun setting outside.
And @strange.website nails the key point: it doesn’t matter if so-called AI “works.” What matters is that the value of your labor goes down, and workers are pushed further into precarity. Of course, what *really* matters is what we collectively decide to do about that. henry.codes/writing/it-d...
It doesn’t matter if it works
Ultimately, whether LLMs "work" as a technology or not doesn't matter. The widespread adoption and deployment should be regarded firstly as a threat to the labor force.
