I have spent a happy weekend devouring the remainder of the Imperial Radch trilogy and I can't recommend it highly enough. Ann Leckie deserves every single award. Sci-fi at its best.
I just read something that explained a little bit of the current world to me: If someone is the "wrong" gender for an extremely traditionally gendered community then you know they're in it purely for the love of the game and they'll likely be the most competent person there.

What's going on with the Russian frigate Neustrashimy (Fearless) firing its guns off the UK coast? Naval gunnery drills in international waters are lawful. What is unusual is that the frigate chose to do so in one of the busiest shipping lanes on earth, 40 miles off a NATO naval base.
