New paper by Acemoglu et al. on how automation may ultimately undermine democracy. As automation (think AI) shifts income from workers to capital, containing the risk of revolt requires ever more redistribution, making repression more attractive to the capitalist state.

When firms aren’t allowed to hire low-skill foreign workers, they don’t hire more Americans. They produce less, invest less, and shrink, with the sharpest effects in rural areas, say researchers at @jhu.edu and @dartmouthartsci.bsky.social. #econsky www.aeaweb.org/research/imm...

Winning the visa lottery

Evidence from a US government lottery shows that restricting foreign low-skill workers shrinks businesses without creating jobs for Americans.

New from me: Until recently, the gap between comfortably-off and just-getting-started could plausibly be crossed in a decade or two of hard work. Growth in asset prices means that’s no longer true: even a lifetime of striving doesn’t offer a realistic prospect of feeling you’ve “made it”.

Global population growth peaked six decades ago— The increase in the world’s population is not exponential. The global population is growing, but the growth rate has declined since its peak six decades ago.

Line chart of annual global population growth rate (percentage) where growth peaked at 2.3% in 1963, fell to less than 1% by 2020, and UN projections show rates declining toward zero and becoming negative by 2100, implying a shrinking global population. High inequality combined with prolonged economic stagnation since the global financial crisis of 2007-09 has been particularly corrosive. It has widened social, cultural and political divides, undermining democratic legitimacy. Read the IFS Deaton Review: ifs.org.uk/inequality

Interesting new Acemoglu, Autor et al paper. Lower birth rates have not reduced economic growth; they are linked to higher GDP per working-age adult across countries and higher wage growth across US commuting zones. Mechanism: a labor-saving technological response to the scarcity of younger workers.
