May be wrong here, but my sense is there is a whole media apparatus that aggressively screens Dem candidates and cautions voters not to support the more left-wing candidate. And this is asymmetric. Credible media messengers don't police right-wing candidates the same way.

It’s just a bizarre example because it’s not like there aren’t plenty of real routine things you have to show ID for if they wanted to make a specious comparison. (Though very few where you have to show ID that proves citizenship)
