I fear we might see a new alignment between a radical right death cult and a rural revivalist "simplicity" drive, which views collapse and a return to "organic" communities as a solution to decadent urbanism. A century ago this convergence led to a very bad place. www.monbiot.com/2023/10/04/t...

@amflynn.bsky.social I just read that you're finishing your column in the mayo news. That'll be a huge loss to the the paper. Youve been a bright light in the mayo news for years xxx
Never want to hear any of these tech companies talking about their ethics again. This has zero use cases outside of generating disinformation, and they pushed it out there anyway
New from 404 Media: Google Earth has introduced an AI feature that lets anyone fabricate completely bullshit satellite images. In our own tests, we added a “bomb blast and crater” to an area of Los Angeles. This is a misinformation time bomb, will 100% be abused www.404media.co/google-earth...

The way we stop upland fires is dramatic rewetting and rewilding of our hills and reducing emissions like it's a life or death situation... Using every lever available to the state domestically and internationally to immediately cut emissions everywhere. It's literally the only way we can stop them
Lol covering the hills in tarmac is actually a much smarter and more obvious mechanism to stop upland fires

I wonder if part of this is that these protests were labelled as farmers protests because that's a magic labelling in ireland, but were full of people who weren't farmers at all. Like there were some there of course but I dont think it was the majority
Wow, it's almost like all those protests weren't really about fuel... www.independent.ie/county/wexfo...

Fuel Support Scheme for farmers ‘under subscribed’ despite €87m budget and nationwide protests over costs
The deputy president of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA) says she does not know why the Fuel Income Support Scheme for farmers and agricultural contractors was significantly “under subscribed.”

Glad to see so much uptake of this story which was first reported by Shamim, but please be aware this is entirely typical and unsurprising behaviour by the DOJ. It’s particularly cruel when the students are from Gaza but it’s also part of a pattern of unjustified visa refusals
Dozens of people from Gaza seeking visas to study in Ireland are denied entry. It was Haneen Eshraim's only “realistic opportunity at this stage to leave Gaza safely and continue my education”, she said. More here www.dublininquirer.com/dozens-of-pe...

Judicial reviews are a fundamental part of democracy — not a dig at the Government by greedy lawyers
A judicial review is any case taken against any public body that may have broken the law — it's the separation of powers working as intended, writes Cathal Malone

I'm late to this but holy hell, I could write an entire book about this single screenshot. The way the image just perfectly captures the journalists doing luxury, disengaged hand-wringing about blackouts while the ACTUAL THREAT plays out in front of their eyes.
Ah lads, not even able to properly fudge an investigation.
A Government investigation into Aughinish Alumina was unable to get hold of "confidential" documents from Sweden relating to the plant's alleged ownership by sanctioned oligarch Oleg Deripaska It turns out the documents are available publicly for a €25 admin fee www.irishtimes.com/ireland/2026...
In a democracy, a politician saying "I am against all judicial reviews" should be career-ending. This is an attempt to undermine the rule of law.
Jack Chambers relies upon citizens (or people in the economy as he calls them) not understanding what a judicial review is. If the state has broken the law you may ask the court to hold them to account. That's what a JR is, and what Jack Chambers is against. The government following it's own laws.
Lads, that was unbelievable. What a game and what an unreal day!!! Mayo Abú!!!
NEW INVESTIGATION: Despite escaping the 'mega fires' seen in countries such as Spain and Greece, Ireland actually has one of Europe’s highest rates of wildfire overlap with protected nature sites, we can reveal

There's a direct correlation between the heat waves and wildfires everywhere and governments pushing ahead with LNG terminals etc
This summer has made it abundantly clear that we need rewetting across all landscapes, varied habitats, firebreaks and a recalibration of what we use water for, and in ireland, a massive growth and restoration of our degraded ecosystems like bog and wet woodlands that are naturally fire resistant
It is straight from the authoritarian playbook. "NGOs and courts shouldn't be able to get involved, we're elected, we represent The Will Of The People." Can they hear themselves, like.
