New research from @sarahawalker.bsky.social explores why people may turn to AI for emotional support, and why chatbots can sometimes feel more comforting than humans. Read more in her new @uk.theconversation.com article: theconversation.com/ai-can-be-mo...

AI can be more comforting than a person – our research shows why

We increasingly turn to chatbots when we are upset. But what they cannot do may be what matters most.

“But AI isn’t a person.” True. But what may matter more is what AI is to the user. People describe GenAI as a friend, confidant or companion. Why turn to it for emotional support? Our latest @uk.theconversation.com article: theconversation.com/ai-can-be-mo...

The ARC has released their new set of grant schemes ▶️ www.arc.gov.au/news-and-pub... Before implementing them, they’re now going to “consult with the sector”. Hopefully genuinely, not just with a few disengaged DVCRs. In the meantime, there’ll be another round of Discovery Projects (DP28).

CHUFFED to see this out! We built the Big Five Aspect Adjectives, an adjective measure that captures personality aspects below the Big Five as both traits & states, ideal for ESM. 4 studies, 3 countries. First evidence that states are valid at the lower levels. journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/...

We're (@katiegreenaway.bsky.social) recruiting a new PhD student to work on interpersonal emotion regulation in everyday life. The position is for a joint PhD program between the University of Melbourne and KU Leuven. Please share! findanexpert.unimelb.edu.au/opportunity/...

Realigning interpersonal regulation in everyday life : Find an Expert : The University of Melbourne

Our societies are becoming more socially disconnected. To address this problem, we need to understand how social connection is created. One powerful method to build social connections is interpersonal emotion regulation, which involves the processes through which people seek and offer emotional support. However, people report providing more emotional support than they receive, suggesting that the provision of emotional support is often unnoticed or unsuccessful. This project aims to understand and reduce this misalignment between the perception and provision of emotional support in everyday life. To do this, we investigate these processes in romantic couples, using new dyadic experience-sampling tools to capture both partners’ perspectives in real time. The project consists of three work packages. Work Package 1 will determine whether perception-provision misalignment is most frequently driven by the receiver or the provider, and which type of misalignment is more consequential for emotional and relational outcomes. Work Package 2 will identify the antecedents of perception-provision misalignment, establishing contextual, individual, and couple-level factors to see who is more at risk when. Finally, Work Package 3 will test a brief intervention to reduce misalignment between perception and provision of support. In determining when and why there are gaps between perceived and provided interpersonal emotion regulation, the project will generate practical methods to strengthen everyday social connection.

I've tweeted this before but I'll tweet it again: when writing proposals, reports, the less-fun stuff etc, you should Pavlov yourself Whatever your little pleasure is, reward small progress with chocolate milk, pistachios, a little scotch, a cigarette. whatever works, life is short

remember when Google offered unlimited digital storage to colleges and universities and then when adoption reached the right levels rescinded that promise, capped everything, and started pricing those services without the subsidies? idk man just something I think about a lot

Just read in the employee newsletter that the Cali State Univ (CSU)—the largest public uni system in the US—not only plans to continue its OpenAI contract, but "will expand toward a multi-vendor AI environment, giving our campuses greater access to a broader ecosystem of AI tools and capabilities" 😡

This is important context for all the incredible research projects that were not funded this round of #DECRA

Dr Jenny Allen@jennyallen13.bsky.social · 10mo ago

To add context, part of why there were so many more applicants is because they moved DECRA back six months, effectively skipping funding the scheme for a year. They had to extend eligibility as a result, so this was essentially two years in one. But with no adjustment to number of grants awarded.
