I am holding a quiet morning vigil for my friend-colleague, as are over 50 of my colleagues who banded together over the years to send tangible relief, love, & support. Academia is a strange thing, but at its best it has always been an odd combo of very local & very global work & relationships.

Saw someone say "fork found in kitchen" to mean something is very obvious but finding a fork in any workplace kitchen is usually a miracle. Is this just a scientist thing or a general phenomenon? What do scientists do with forks?

🥵 Europe has been affected by a terrible heatwave, with impacts across the continent & record-breaking temperatures in many countries. The @ipcc.bsky.social #AR6 conclusions show that that heat extremes have become more intense & more frequent across the world due to human-induced climate change.

I'm generally an advocate for eating the rich but this graph puts my teeth on edge. Why compare top 5 with top 15? If you multiply the 1918 values by 3 to get to 15 you end up with about the same. Plus the legend us pointless.

A lot of media coverage of the ‘AI’ reading of the Herculaneum scrolls really fails to understand what’s happened here. There’s no language processing happening, the AI/ML is not trained on a corpus of texts or language. It can detect ink to see shapes. HUMAN EXPERTS are then transcribing the text.

I understand that universities choose to not have staff emails on their websites to minimise phishing and spam but how exactly am I supposed to contact reviewers?
