Yay: Successfully replaced the third function diverter valve on my tractor this evening! 🎉 Boo: The new diverter valve didn’t fix the problem. 😒

Welcome to Technology Short Take 197! I’ve been traveling for business for the last week, so this Technology Short Take has a tad fewer links than I typically include. Even so, I still have links on r...

The most dangerous thing about AI is not that the machines might one day think. It is that we are being trained, by men with enormous financial gains riding on our acquiescence, to stop thinking for ourselves.
I found a typo that was preventing the preview cards on my weblog from being fetched and displayed by social media sites. I'm glad I found it, but frustrated that I missed it the first time. Deploying the fix will have to wait until I'm not on unreliable/slow airport Wi-Fi.
The next Technology Short Take is here! Have a look and find some weekend reading. blog.scottlowe.org/2026/06/19/t...

A PhD student at Stanford noticed her classmates were asking Al to write their breakup texts. So she ran a study. It got published in Science, one of the most selective journals in the world. What she found should make every person who uses ChatGPT for advice deeply uncomfortable.
So what is the preferred tool folks are using to scan for secrets in your Git repos these days?
I found a Rust-based implementation of a devcontainer CLI. After some testing, I ran into a showstopper bug. It also appears to be more tightly coupled to VSCode than I had hoped. I've opened an issue/bug report on the former, and I think I can workaround the latter.

I find it fascinating that the cloud native community has so fully embraced devcontainers and VSCode when the VSCode extension for devcontainers is not open source (see code.visualstudio.com/docs/support...).

I absolutely detest that #Apple is forcing iOS 26 on me instead of allowing me to install the latest iOS 18 security update.
I grew up being a Microsoft Office fan in the 90s. Now, I find the suite of tools oh so very cumbersome to use and not very friendly at all.
Question for #devcontainer experts: should the container stop when you exit the editor/IDE? Or when you close the project in the editor/IDE? Or neither, and it just stays running? (If it matters, I'm using @zed.dev.)
OK, I have created my own #devcontainer image and I have started testing it with @zed.dev using a small project. So far, so good.
Once I get the hang of using @zed.dev, the next step is to switch all my personal projects to use Devcontainers. You can bank on the fact I'll be pestering @usrbinkat.io with all my questions during that process. LOL!
I'm really trying to get the hang of using @zed.dev (switching from Sublime Text). I like the speed, but you can tell there are some rough edges here and there.

The list of people I can trust to NOT throw me under the bus grows shorter more often than I'd like.
There are things I can "disagree and commit" on, but NOT using the Oxford comma is not one. To my dying day, I will keep reinserting it into any doc that gives me editor access.
Updating my #ArchLinux systems is usually pretty quick, but on the one system where I have an #NVIDIA GPU and have CUDA installed the process takes notably longer (primarily because the download sizes are so much larger).
With possible food shortages coming, I thought I'd post this. Buy a few extra each time you shop. Rotate foods. First in, first out. Plastic buckets are great. Save your glass containers. Look up shelf life. These are per adult, per year figures. Buy seeds for gardening. Don't panic, be prepared.

If you're telling me that "We can learn so much from AI" allow me to just remind you that what folks are calling AI is just a statistical model built on human intelligence and knowledge.
