Without saying your age, what is your favorite movie that came out when you were 20?

Knowing that the plastic dinosaurs we played with as kids consisted, to whatever actual extent, of real dinosaurs.

This is going to be fun. Schmoob is currently cutting down 40mins of new music into a 15 minute set, and I’m providing some moody bookends.

Was at the Byrne concert last night at the Hollywood Bowl— and it really grabs you from whatever seat you are in. Somewhere in his mind he knows how this plays when he’s the tiny animated man far in the distance and constructs a show that kills even at the back of the house.

My hot take (I was there last night) was that it was like watching a charismatic evangelical preacher: trembling hands, odd body jerks, communal singing, messages of love and change. Nick Cave and David Byrne have something similar. (Does it go back to Elvis?)

This beautiful owl has been spending her days in the tree in front of our home. It’s a heat wave, so I put a bowl of water out, but mostly she wanted to be left alone.

Really great Bitwig event yesterday. I’m a bit weary of learning new software, but watching Bitwig being used in 4 very different ways was a treat. Also learned quite a bit from @3amnoise.net ‘s in-depth mixing and mastering chain, all built with native tools.

Totally changing my appraisal of The Great Muppet Caper as a fun and silly film I loved as a kid, to a landmark quirky work of comedic excellence and a real cinematic flex. The film plays so differently as an adult — some of the most clever and consistent 4th wall breaks, and my god— bicycle scene!

Marvelous technology that can’t do what CDs, tapes, and vinyl did well— play one song seamlessly into the next. Streaming is just feeding you bonbons, but rarely a meal.

Caught a beautiful 35mm print of The Truman Show tonight. Such a clever and subversive film that has aged really well. Unsure if it inspired all the crazy flat earther lore, or was reacting to it. Weir can direct so many kinds of film well. And a powerful minute of Phillip Glass’s Mishima soundtrack

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

My main Andor thought is that folks who dug it would absolutely adore Army of Shadows.

Nolan’s dialogue tracks are just fine if your overall levels peak at 108 db. This was at the Dolby, and I’ve heard it’s very loud in 70mm IMAX as well.

For God’s sake, be economical with your lamps and candles! not a gallon you burn, but at least one drop of man’s blood was spilled for it.

Much like the worst meal you’ve ever eaten— you don’t send it back, you shamefully consume the whole thing. For me, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. I would have gladly walked out, but I was in the center of one of first few rows at the Cineramadome in Hollywood.
