Senate Budget Committee

Fighting for an economy that puts workers and families first. The latest news from Ranking Member Sen. Jeff Merkley and Senate Budget Committee Dems.
This week, Republicans on the Senate Budget Committee will use scare tactics and bogus estimates to justify cutting a trillion dollars from health care programs—costing millions of eligible people their health care coverage—all to fund tax breaks for billionaires.
The so-called “party of small government” created a bureaucratic nightmare for Americans who’re just trying to feed their families. 440,000 Arizonans are caught up in red tape caused by Trump’s Big, Ugly Betrayal and other states could be hit just as hard. This is just cruel.
America needs to invest in nutrition, housing, health care, and education at home—not waste the Treasury on Trump’s failed war of choice.
Republicans are once again wasting the Treasury on a failed forever war rather than investing in the fundamentals families need to thrive: housing, health care, and education.
Donald Trump and Russ Vought are openly using your tax dollars as a weapon to reward allies and punish opponents. This is as corrupt as it gets. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/24/b...
Trump Administration Admits Canceling Grants to States That Did Not Vote for Him
Federal officials said in court documents that they halted billions of dollars in funding for energy projects to states “based solely” on whether they backed President Trump in the 2024 election.

Trump’s war of choice has been a disaster for American families in every possible way.
Rather than looking out for Americans and investing in health care, the Republican trifecta slashed coverage just to ensure their billionaire friends could pay less in taxes. As a result, 37.4 million Americans will be uninsured in a decade. www.budget.senate.gov/ranking-memb...

NEW: @senatebudget.bsky.social analysis finds Trump's ICE and CBP are flush with more than $152 BILLION after the passage of Republicans' second partisan funding bill. All while American families struggle just to get by with no help from Trump. www.budget.senate.gov/ranking-memb...

No child in America should go hungry while billionaires get bigger tax breaks, but that’s exactly what Trump has done. More than 1.5 MILLION kids have been kicked off the SNAP program—all to make billionaires even wealthier.
HUGE: A federal court ruled that Trump CANNOT retroactively cancel grants. Since day one, Trump and Vought have been trying to override Congress by canceling and withholding BILLIONS in appropriated funds. This is a major win for American science and research.
Republicans’ third reconciliation bill is just like their first two: terrible for American families.
Americans: Groceries are completely unaffordable. Republicans: Okay, here's another partisan bill that spends $95 BILLION on Trump's war in the Middle East and making it harder for you to vote. www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2026/...
Two-thirds of Americans find groceries unaffordable, Post-Ipsos poll finds
A new Washington Post poll found that more Americans are feeling worse about the price of groceries than they were before the war with Iran began.

Republicans already passed two funding bills—and neither did a single thing to help working families. Now, they're pushing a third bill to fund Trump's unconstitutional war and enact his voter suppression efforts. They're completely out-of-touch with Americans.
@merkley.senate.gov and @wyden.senate.gov demanded answers from Sec. Kennedy and Dr. Oz after they stacked Trump's Healthcare Advisory Committee with Trump insiders, corporate executives, and members with MAJOR industry investments. Americans deserve better for their healthcare.

Trump promised to end wars, lower costs, and “drain the swamp.” Instead, he started a war with Iran that massively raised costs for Americans, while his trust traded $700 MILLION+ worth of stocks. Promises made, promises broken.
The Constitution is clear: Congress is charged with deciding how taxpayer dollars are spent. But a new proposed rule from OMB Director Russ Vought is the Administration’s latest attempt to weaken that Congressional authority and expand Trump’s power.
Years ago, Russ Vought created a roadmap to centralize power for President Trump and now he’s executing it.
No child in America should go hungry while billionaires get a bigger tax break. But that’s exactly what Trump did. He passed a massive tax break for the wealthy and now more than 800,000 kids have been kicked off the SNAP program. Families lose, billionaires win.
One year ago, Republicans passed Trump’s Big, Ugly Betrayal bill. They knew that millions of Americans would lose health care and food assistance as a result, but the damage is worse than we thought. 🧵
One year ago, Trump passed his Big, Ugly Bill. And families have been paying for it ever since.
Families are paying more for groceries. More for gas. More for child care. More for housing. And what is Trump prioritizing? A ballroom and a reflecting pool.

OUTRAGEOUS: ICE and Border Patrol were already sitting on $95 BILLION when Republicans handed them another $70 billion. Billions more for ICE and CBP, and nothing for you and your family.
NEW: @senatebudget.bsky.social confirms ICE and CBP had $95 BILLION in unspent funds—even before Republicans handed them an additional $70 BILLION. Families are struggling with costs while Republicans ignore them and give BILLIONS to a rogue agency. www.budget.senate.gov/ranking-memb...
Responding to ZERO out of six letters from Congress isn’t a “process issue,” it’s a prime example of the Trump Administration’s flagrant disregard for the separation of powers.

For over a year, Donald Trump and Russ Vought have weaponized government spending to reward their political allies and punish their opponents. Hal Duncan seems prepared to do the same. I’m voting NO on his nomination.
