Sad to hear of Tony Kenny’s death. As another distinguished Balliol philosopher said of him, his first thoughts about anything were reliably more insightful and interesting than most philosophers’ third or fourth thoughts.

The problem is not the use of money creation when it’s needed; it’s the failure when that money has done its work to destroy it by taxing the assets whose value has been inflated by the monetary expansion.

The whole system of giving commercial banks the privilege of creating money for domestic mortgages for which they will incur profits not far off the value of the property for such the mortgage is given needs to be rethought. At the very least, we should make them pay properly for the privilege.

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.

The Met Police arrested people for all sorts of ludicrous reasons, including putting down a tiny stand so that people sharing poetry and song could be heard. No amplification was used at all. One muslim woman was arrested for simply greeting the crowd. She said nothing unlawful.

If you ever feel unqualified, remember that a gang of billionaires spent $900 million for 60,000 acres with no water, no infrastructure, a roster of endangered species, and a voter-approved ordinance that specifically bans building a city there. Now they’re begging politicians to bail them out.
