Sam can weigh pros & cons, & come to that conclusion from his position of wealth, privilege, & safety. The rest of us can also weigh pros & cons, & come to our own conclusions. I, for instance, like to consider the consequences for the most vulnerable among us & the motives of those who push AI.

today's essential read for all Canadians. "the government’s huge subsidization of this project – up to 90 % of a $40B pipeline with ownership split evenly between Ottawa and Edmonton – lays bare a reality unfolding across the world economy: FFs aren’t just losing to clean energy. They’ve lost."

Is it really a good idea for the government to subsidize a pipeline?

Designating the West Coast pipeline as a project of national interest exposes a global reality: Fossil fuels haven’t just lost to clean energy – they’ve already lost

Important. I'm not sure what will change without asking why the system has tolerated >30% of students not meeting its own outcomes year after year, decade after decade. It can turn into generations. There's a strong expectation that bureaucratic wheels turn. I'd like to see more transparency.

AG Kim Adair just released a new report on Provincial Student Assessments, which are annually given to students in Grades 3, 6 & 8. Find out how @nsgov.bsky.social could better use the results to inform its billion-dollar education system: www.oag-ns.ca/audit-reports/provincial-student-assessments

REcommendation: AB’s health + OHS must adopt the precautionary principle when responding to new respiratory illnesses. It should require employers to provide the strongest possible safeguards for employee health until there is greater certainty about the transmission of a new respiratory virus.

I’m listening to a program about AI in schools and thinking about how hard my kid’s school and school board have fought the most basic concerns about programming, equity, safety, and ethics. It’s a whole other reason to fear their rush to integrate AI:

Thinking about my grade sevens 25 years ago and how we tried together over the following few weeks to make some sense of something so huge and awful. Being a teacher is such a privilege and responsibility.

Lake Ontario's name comes from the Wyandot word Ontarí'io, which is typically translated as "beautiful lake". The Kanienʼkéha called it Katarokwi. Samuel de Champlain called it Lac de St. Louis. The name Lacus Ontario was first recorded in 1660 by Francis Creuxius.

Yes. In Nova Scotia, Public Health is very quiet on Covid prevention - including Health Canada's recommendation to improve ventilation. It seems worth noting as children prepare for yet another school year with no plan in place to monitor their indoor air quality and make improvements as necessary

As a Canadian, although our government still recommends precautions, they don’t do it out loud. You have to search for it. There are no national (or provincial) strategies here. Not even in healthcare.

US is reportedly asking Canada for first-refusal rights on critical minerals, completion of its F-35 purchase, more US defense procurement tied to Golden Dome + guarantees on future oil & gas supplies. Another example of security, trade and resources being folded into one transactional relationship

"They taught me that grief is not a destination, it’s like a creek — you don’t stop it. You discipline yourself to sit beside it, make kin with it, let it flow, and let it carry away what it needs to carry." A beautiful read from kelsie kilawna. indiginews.com/first-person...

In this new article, co-authored with Will Paul, we argue that the struggle against autocracy is not simply a political challenge but an educational and cultural one. This requires a renewed commitment to democratic values and collective resistance. canadiandimension.com/articles/vie...

Drawing the line against autocracy

At stake is more than educational policy. What is being contested is whether education will nurture critically engaged citizens capable of resistance, or produce subjects trained for adaptation, silen...

In the face of the change to LPC direction on climate policy, this is disappointing. The gov't needs voices spotlighting the climate crisis. Help the Climate Caucus be heard, sit as an independent, cross to a party willing to stand for the environment. Canada can't afford to bleed progressive MPs.

In case anyone is wondering how seriously the Carney government takes consultation with First Nations, they sent an invite after hours Friday for an engagement session today on their proposals to gut major project regulation.
