"The problem in our country isn't with books being banned, but with people no longer reading. You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them." - Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451 Holly Farrell Paperbacks acrylic and oils on board 2022

Scientist by day, writer by night, witch by full moon, chronically ill….well, chronically ✍️📚☕️🧙🏻♀️🦓 Currently on draft 2 of my fantasy novel - heavy on disability, witchcraft & female rage 🖤 🚫AI
As both an academic and a writer, I am repelled by the "this looks like a long document. Would you like me to summarize it for you?" that seems to appear at the top of every pdf viewer now. NO. The *entire point* of good writing (either books or journal papers) is that every sentence has a purpose.
Still mindblown to hold my manuscript in my hands!! Let the editing begin 🖍️ I’m not one to promote diet culture but…it’s time to trim the fat on this bby✂️ #Writersky
aside from everything else, it's very funny to pretend that hiring "GHOST writers" ever made you, yourself, an author. you are simply describing two types of guys who did not write a book
"the raw data of a novel" 🙃 The way AI evangelists talk about art is truly alien to me. (From a comment left on an article of mine.)
i-- i promised I'd walk the kids to school but i will be doing it on a cloud of gratitude. thank you all, and special thanks to Amal for accepting on my behalf, and congratulations to every single person on this list!!!
The 2026 Hugo Award for Best Novel goes to The Everlasting by Alix E. Harrow (Tor US; Tor UK).
Finished Yesteryear by Caro Claire Burke this weekend. The narration absolutely blew me away. And it’s a debut!! Witty, challenging, and so so relevant. #Booksky
Mom sent me photos of the first book I ever wrote. Two napkins taped together - that’s all it takes, folks. #WriterSky
Reading before bed instead of doom scrolling. Not only am I sleeping really well, but I also think I’m better than everyone.
12 scenes left to finish Draft 2! (Did I already surpass my goal word count limit? yes. Am I worried about it? also, yes.) Couldn’t do it without my loyal co-authors 🐶🐾 #Writersky
the 'authors shouldn't use big words' thing is so antithetical to the way I read. It's a JOY to learn a new word. Isn't it exciting to come away from a book knowing something you didn't?
Finishing this book on day one of my period was a mistake. Atmospheric, heartbreaking, and inspiring (as both a writer and a witch). Thank you, @alixeharrow.bsky.social 🖤 PS- it seems witchcraft may be a viable route to a matriarchy. Sending coven invites now via mockingbird. #Booksky
This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.
Fiction and fantasy aren't "fake" any more than light seen through a prism is fake. It's just seen from a different perspective. Light through a prism is still light. Truth through a story is still the truth.
so i log off for a couple of days and now we're debating whether books need big words and sex scenes??? two of my favorite things a book can have???? no. i don't believe you. this is a prank pulled on me specifically
I can’t stop thinking about this poem from the Widow’s Bay finale 😭
Unsolicited writing advice, no. 76696: Reading (both widely and critically) is the secret to writing well. No one can expect to write unless they also read, and understand the value of reading.
Finished Ghost Wall by Sarah Moss on audio this weekend while weeding in my garden. Ended up sitting in the dirt and crying 💚 (highly recommend) #BookSky
sylvia townsend warner in 1926, foreseeing the type of author who would use AI:
eavesdropping on a couple of english lit academics in st. john, i overheard confirmation of what is surely going to be the biggest literary news story of the year
Disgusting and dazzling. Unmatched prose and body horror. Really expanded my vocabulary! 🧜🩸 #BookSky
Just created a writing schedule to try and reach my goal of being query ready by 2027! Unrelated- who do I contact to ask for an extension on 2026? Just an extra month or so. We could call it Jancember. Name is flexible - open to suggestions 🤗 #WriterSky
Everything I love in a book and more. Accurate depiction of the Puritan witch craze and beautiful portrayal of true folk magic and pagan practices. “I am death and I am life, and the circle…it will go on” 🐍 #BookSky
Was researching black widow spiders for my novel yesterday…lo and behold, I had an eight-legged visitor in the shower today 🕷️ Was likely a false widow but safe to say I wouldn’t last long on Naked and Afraid. The spider has now been released…it was a long day for both of us.
