Putting aside his overdramatic commentary, is he broadly wrong? For anxiety and fear in particular, treatment is typically exposure to the thing so that you can rack up experiences with it that do not result in harm, reorienting your subconscious.

This treating of racism as like a taint that permanently scars an institution irredeemably is, I hope, what people are talking about dispensing with when they shit on Woke 1.0. Would be unobjectionable if presented merely as a history of racism in the rock music genre instead of saying "defined"

Finally got a photo of the groundhog that patrols my neighborhood.

It is a moral failure to see a country slide into fascism and have no emotional reaction to that fact, to regard it is neutral background noise, to not really care. It indicates a broken character.

The question is if that perspective is true or not, though. If it's not, the core issue fix is to find out why people think that it is, not "let's start the new communist revolution"

There are two separate dimensions that people here and elsewhere keep conflating: 1) Willingness to fight fascism. 2) Position on the left-right political compass.

I do eat meat but I try to eat less of it and avoid certain animals because I do think vegans have a bit of a point. But I still think PETA is absurd and stupid and does a lot of damage to their own (alleged) agenda.

Terrible plan because my first, second, and third thoughts were all "either way it's getting ate."

I don't in fact think the Democrats need to cater to a minority of political radicals in order to take a bold stance against fascism, and if you do, I immediately suspect you're one of the political radicals in question.

So much confusion is caused by people using the word "rights" to mean both legal rights and moral rights and waffling between the two without ever clearly drawing the distinction and indicating which one they mean.

I don't know if it counts as "niche" but it certainly gets people upset at you online, but I think it's wrong to dance on the graves of the dead even if they were bad people.

One thing you can see in the latest Stancil blowup is that a sizable share of this website thinks that good intentions are the only thing that matter in policymaking, and expressing skepticism that a policy will really work as intended is equivalent to stealing food from the poor.

I think AI is useful and I use it in places where it is useful.

Just one up her and say the government should just give the food away instead of charging for it, and if she objects, claim she doesn't understand that people need to eat.

Man this is awful. This was a sincere question. I was happy with the discussion that came out of it. But I wake up this morning to nonstop abuse, because one of Bluesky’s cult-like figures has (pretty unfairly) attacked me as not understanding people need food. This isn’t good or sustainable!

IMO this election is less Talarico vs Paxton and more Talarico vs "Vote R No Matter Who".

I think he kind of has a point, despite being a complete prick. Imagine if your computer, or printer, or any other tool morally assessed what you were using it for and denied you access. That's a pretty dystopic outcome liberals should want to avoid.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

The real question is if people know the difference between democratic socialism and social democracy. I think a lot of people say the former but mean the latter and it causes a great deal of confusion. I also think sincere democratic socialists do this on purpose as a motte-and-bailey.

The fact that a majority of voters dislike something is not evidence that they are correct. Often the correct approach is to persuade voters, not cater to them.
