If the AI water issue were real, it'd be easy to go to people's homes that were actually affected by the normal operational water draw of a data center. Instead, MPU always chooses: 1) Places polluted by construction 2) Protestors without data centers nearby 3) Pecan farmers It's been over a year

Proud "Turbolib", Pantheist, and American Anti-Fascist, Anti-Communist, Pro-Regulated Capitalism Retro Gamer, FinOps Engineer Supporter @projectliberal.org If you're MAGA, block me. If Karl Marx is your favorite "economist", block me.
Putting aside his overdramatic commentary, is he broadly wrong? For anxiety and fear in particular, treatment is typically exposure to the thing so that you can rack up experiences with it that do not result in harm, reorienting your subconscious.
Your Excellency, you’re a bishop of a midsize diocese in Minnesota.
This treating of racism as like a taint that permanently scars an institution irredeemably is, I hope, what people are talking about dispensing with when they shit on Woke 1.0. Would be unobjectionable if presented merely as a history of racism in the rock music genre instead of saying "defined"
Finally got a photo of the groundhog that patrols my neighborhood.
It is a moral failure to see a country slide into fascism and have no emotional reaction to that fact, to regard it is neutral background noise, to not really care. It indicates a broken character.
The question is if that perspective is true or not, though. If it's not, the core issue fix is to find out why people think that it is, not "let's start the new communist revolution"
if I was a young person being told that the best our economic system can ever offer me is working longer and longer hours to live with more and more roommates and eat worse and worse food, I might start getting this crazy idea that we need a new economic system
There are two separate dimensions that people here and elsewhere keep conflating: 1) Willingness to fight fascism. 2) Position on the left-right political compass.
I do eat meat but I try to eat less of it and avoid certain animals because I do think vegans have a bit of a point. But I still think PETA is absurd and stupid and does a lot of damage to their own (alleged) agenda.
Terrible plan because my first, second, and third thoughts were all "either way it's getting ate."
I don't in fact think the Democrats need to cater to a minority of political radicals in order to take a bold stance against fascism, and if you do, I immediately suspect you're one of the political radicals in question.
So much confusion is caused by people using the word "rights" to mean both legal rights and moral rights and waffling between the two without ever clearly drawing the distinction and indicating which one they mean.
I don't know if it counts as "niche" but it certainly gets people upset at you online, but I think it's wrong to dance on the graves of the dead even if they were bad people.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?
One thing you can see in the latest Stancil blowup is that a sizable share of this website thinks that good intentions are the only thing that matter in policymaking, and expressing skepticism that a policy will really work as intended is equivalent to stealing food from the poor.
I think AI is useful and I use it in places where it is useful.
Just one up her and say the government should just give the food away instead of charging for it, and if she objects, claim she doesn't understand that people need to eat.
Man this is awful. This was a sincere question. I was happy with the discussion that came out of it. But I wake up this morning to nonstop abuse, because one of Bluesky’s cult-like figures has (pretty unfairly) attacked me as not understanding people need food. This isn’t good or sustainable!
IMO this election is less Talarico vs Paxton and more Talarico vs "Vote R No Matter Who".
New TX Senate poll by Texas Public Opinion Research (7/15-7/17, ±3.4%): Talarico 45% (-2% from May) Paxton 40% (-4%) "Paxton’s 40% vote share is the lowest he has received in a public poll post-runoff."
I think he kind of has a point, despite being a complete prick. Imagine if your computer, or printer, or any other tool morally assessed what you were using it for and denied you access. That's a pretty dystopic outcome liberals should want to avoid.
Just in case you still use any Basecamp products, DHH is crashing out about his AI product gently pointing out that it’s bad for him to have extermination fantasies about the Roma people.
1) This is precisely why anyone of public note should not even engage with Fuentes. It encourages others to do the same. Hunter was wrong to do this interview. 2) You're scum for platforming this Nazi fuck in a positive light.
Fuentes to Hunter: “I agree: Trump is a cruel narc*ssist. A liar, bull 💩 artist. If you’re ‘America First’ you have no place in this Republican Party… I’m telling my people: VOTE DEMOCRAT. They’ll use oversight powers to bring Trump corruption to light.” Full: www.instagram.com/reel/DbSAuCn...

Kratom and its effects is a great argument *against* the libertarian idea that such substances should be sold as freely as bread, napkins, etc. rather than heavily regulated with mandated warnings and sold by specific businesses that indicate to the user exactly what they are getting into.
Exhibit 376 that it's a moral panic. Comparing light industrial buildings occupying a tiny percentage of the overall available land to the dust bowl.
A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.
Assuming someone like Talarico or Warnock has secret sympathies with radical evangelical Christians because they are Christian is no different than assuming Mamdani has secret sympathies with Islamism because he's Muslim.
This has always been what sex is. The concept of gender was created specifically to separate all of the other aspects of "male" and "female" from biological sex.
NEWSPEAK UPDATE: gamete mobility now included
Tankies: Communism isn't authoritarian; that's just Western propaganda. Also Tankies: Here's all the people I think should be lined up against a wall and shot for their political views.
Almost all gun crimes involve handguns. The fixation on AR-15s is because they "look scary" and are culturally associated with a group people on the left broadly hate, not because their presence is causing a lot of real harm.
Assistant AG Harmeet Dhillon: "The AR-15, the most commonly used rifle in the United States, is a semi-automatic weapon that is banned by these purported 'laws' and we believe the Supreme Court in this coming term is going to make it explicitly clear that these are permitted."
People seemingly have lost the muscle for assessing *character* and we need to retrain it.
What kills me about this guy is that it was such an easy call right at the outset, and yet here we fucking are
The real question is if people know the difference between democratic socialism and social democracy. I think a lot of people say the former but mean the latter and it causes a great deal of confusion. I also think sincere democratic socialists do this on purpose as a motte-and-bailey.
The fact that a majority of voters dislike something is not evidence that they are correct. Often the correct approach is to persuade voters, not cater to them.
