Mixed feelings about such a campaign. It’s good people care - but our science is in a sorry state when it has to now rely on charitable donations. And if it works it may just encourage more cuts down the line because charity can take over.

If you've read the news about @ukri.org decision to remove funding for research @jodrellbank.bsky.social and feel we need to keep our astronomy and facilities in the UK - then support @officialuom.bsky.social raise funds here - donate.manchester.ac.uk/p/jodrellbank/

Extremely concerning news that Jodrell Bank in Cheshire is facing closure, after UKRI announced the end of their funding from 2028. Though the Lovell Telescope is Grade I listed, the best strategy for preserving this internationally significant site is surely to keep the observatory in active use.

I am all for saving Jodrell Bank, but please don’t lose sight of the fact that it is simply the most visible manifestation of a much bigger problem, which isn’t solved if someone magically finds the money to keep it going, simply to shut people up. 🔭🧪

Improved connections have been talked about for decades. Will it actually come to something this time?

“One of the most exciting infrastructure projects in Britain right now,” read a breathless tweet by @tomforth.co.uk. “If we could build tunnels like the Norwegians, we could build new motorways and railways so cheaply that they could be self-funding. “The biggest prize is Sheffield to Manchester.”

What some call "unused land" is often the last safe haven for countless living creatures. Wetlands are not empty spaces waiting to be developed. They are nurseries for birds, natural water filters, flood defenses, and wildlife habitats that cannot be replaced once lost.

The UK Space Agency had just been folded into DSIT (only as of April!) to merge a lot of backroom admin and cut down on duplication between it and DSIT space directorate. Further changes before the dust has settled for UKSA/DSIT is probably not what most in the space sector wanted to hear.

'The incoming prime minister has asked officials to draw up plans to abolish the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology as part of a wider Whitehall shake-up.' Although not yet signed off, quite a 'thing' if you're a university researcher or at a university that undertakes research. 1/3

THAT’S the nature of this ‘record R&D spending’ that’s DEVASTATING the public sector scaffolding of UK research capabilities. It’s just not that good. As a fraction of GDP, we’re way behind countries that are actually serious about science. But say that and the ministers go all hurty-feelings.

🌡 The June #C3S Climate Bulletin reports the second-warmest June globally, 1.39°C above the pre-industrial level. Western Europe saw its warmest June on record amid an intense heatwave, while the average sea surface temperature (SST) over 60°S–60°N reached 20.86°C, the highest on record for June. ⬇️

@ukri.org can spin it but transparency and accountability is missing. InnovateUk has not published 2026 Council meeting minutes, while they push funding to 'potential high potential businesses' without showing governance of said funding. #cronyism afoot? www.ukri.org/who-we-are/i...

How Innovate UK is governed

Our work is overseen by a council, which sets overall objectives and direction. Council members have a range of expertise in research and innovation.

Worth subscribing and if you don’t live in Sheffield many other cities have twinned publications. No horrible pop up ads and decent journalism instead of endless click bait with reams of racist comments under the Facebook posts of the articles.
