What does it take to stay relevant in romance for nearly five decades? In Episode 175, Jayne Ann Krentz talks about the risks and reinventions that shaped her career, why the alpha hero never disappeared, how romance changes with culture, and why popular fiction matters in unstable times.

A podcast & Substack about romance novels, and how they reflect, explore, challenge, and shape desire. Host: Andrea Martucci (she/her) #romancebks #romancereader https://linktr.ee/shelflovepodcast
HEA discourse again? Groundbreaking. Every few months, someone discovers that romance novels end happily and mistakes genre convention for creative failure. Just because you don’t understand the system doesn’t mean the system is shallow. #romancebks shelflovepodcast.substack.com/p/hea-discou...

This… “HEA”? Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you.

Sought, Surrender, and the Alien Erotics of Inevitability The question is not “is this fantasy good?” The question is: what emotional need is this fantasy solving? Dame Jodie Slaughter is here to discuss Sought by Evangeline Anderson. #romancebks Listen on your favorite podcast app!
Willard E. Hawkins approached the pulp romance genre as a n00b (and ultimately very clinically), but to his credit, he nevertheless Gets It. (From THE AUTHOR & JOURNALIST, February 1943. Coming soon to a blog near you!)
Claire Kent is out here with her heroines making 50 kinds of silly sounds in every book. What a beautiful, campy genre we have. #romancebks
I am collecting “ideal” and “failed” romance novels from Janice Radway’s 1984 Reading the Romance. How much have preferences in #romancebks changed in the last 40+ years? We’ll see if I find out! substack.com/home/post/p-...

I have never noticed a consistent PLEASANT smell about a person (or nailed down the components of it, eg “lemon & bergamot”). I know this is used in romance as a signifier, but also: Am I the olfactory challenged or is it romance physiology? #romancelandia
I know we’re not supposed to yuck anyone’s yum, but I’ve ever actually seen anyone say they like blond men as romance leads, so I think it’s safe to yuck? Discuss. #romancebks
"The problem is when these lists [of 'firsts'] stop functioning as entry points and start functioning as endpoint. […] The archive flattens and the genre's past starts to look cleaner, more linear, and more settled than it actually is."
Here’s @shelflove.bsky.social to remind us that any claims of “firsts” in the romance genre are tenuous at best: shelflovepodcast.substack.com/p/condoms-in...

My husband, who basically has no intentional social media presence, posted this photo of our dog on Mastodon and got like 68 likes and growing. As an experiment, I’m curious how many likes this will get on my romance novel podcast account… #petsofbluesky
Reading Bourdieu and thinking I should change how I describe myself from “independent romance scholar” to “illegitimate autodidactic romance scholar.” Ironically, understanding the reference requires specialized intellectual training that renders this “joke” humorless. #romancebks

To be clear: I think this packaging is boring, verging on ugly. But: am I the target market for this cover? (I don’t think I am.) And what does the actual target market think of this style?
I just want to clarify: THIS is the hardcover for Heated Rivalry that Harlequin is issuing? What is this? I don't understand. My head is going to tilt right off my neck and bounce down the hall. The secondhand embarrassment is registering on seismographs. (And still no tie-in cover? How?!)

Just gave up on two advanced reader copies of romance a few pages in because both displayed a galling and breathlessly incorrect understanding of how W2 salaried jobs work & current norms in the labor market. It’s called verisimilitude! I’m willing to suspend my disbelief to an extent, but come on…
"Romance novels aren’t meant to explore a utopia — they’re a fantasy of succeeding in a world with the same challenges, power imbalances, and constraints as the one we live in." #romancelandia shelflovepodcast.substack.com/p/i-want-you...

Many years ago, I was feeling stressed by the state of the world and I started a Holiday Fairies thing where people sent me their wishlists and I publicized them to try to get everyone gifts for the holidays. @shelflove.bsky.social skillfully took it over and made it An Actual Thing! Like SRSLY!
