Archibald Leach (Cary Grant) was born in this Horfield house in 1904. While at school, aged 9 his clinically depressed mother was institutionalised and he was told by his father that she had abandoned them and later that she’d died. He didn’t discover that she was still alive until he was 31. 1/2

The Great Gatehouse on College Green was once the gatehouse to St Augustine’s Abbey - a precursor to Bristol Cathedral, founded in 1140. The tower was added around 1500 but the lower section dates back to 1170 - making it among the oldest man made structures still standing in Bristol.

Hillary Clinton’s great-grandfather, Edwin Howell was born in Bedminster in 1866 and his family had lived in South Bristol for generations before him. Howell moved to Illinois in 1890 and married an American woman. His granddaughter, Dorothy Howell Rodham, gave birth to Hillary in 1947.
