Climate and sea-ice scientist at MET Norway. Research interests include sea ice, oceans, and polar climate. Living in the far north and love gardening, hiking, paddling, and drinking coffee. Any opinions expressed are my own.

Look at the Barents Sea! Relative to the 1981-2010 climate reference period, there is unusually little sea ice for this time of year. In fact, the Barents Sea ice extent has reached record-low levels in six of the past 12 months (Aug-Dec and June), indicating later freeze-up and earlier melt.

Map showing Arctic sea-ice concentration in June 2026 compared with the median June sea-ice edge (1981–2010, orange). The largest departure from the historical average is in the Barents Sea, where the ice edge has retreated far north, indicating unusually low sea-ice extent for this time of year.Heatmap of monthly Barents Sea ice-extent rankings from 1979 to 2026. Blue indicates months with relatively high ice extent, while red indicates low ice extent. The recent decade is dominated by low rankings, with record-low ice extent occurring in six of the past 12 months (August–December 2025 and June 2026).

On Saturday, research vessel Polarstern will head to HAUSGARTEN,a long-term Arctic observatory in the Fram Strait. Since 1999,it has recorded ecological changes in the water column and on the seafloor, providing key insights into climate impacts on polar marine ecosystems. www.awi.de/en/about-us/...

Polarstern sets course for the HAUSGARTEN Arctic long-term observatory

In 1999, the Alfred Wegener Institute launched an ambitious project: the HAUSGARTEN observatory in the Fram Strait between northeast Greenland and Svalbard. Spanning ice-covered waters and extending t...

When reality surpasses fiction! Top: fictional forecast for August 2050, broadcast by French TV in 2014 to warn about the consequences of global warming. Bottom: Real French forecast for yesterday, June 22, 2026.

Trying to refreeze Arctic sea ice by pumping ocean water onto its surface is infeasible and a distraction from emissions cuts, but it signals how desperate we are because we’re simply not decarbonizing fast enough (or at all).

My trip to meet the scientists trying to refreeze the Arctic

In this week’s newsletter: The melting of the Arctic’s summer sea ice is the most visible upshot of the climate crisis. Refreezing it might be a long shot – but do drastic times call for drastic measu...

I’m probably late to the party, but Met Norway now has regional #SeaIce data/graphic for all the regions of the #Arctic (and Antarctic). The regions don’t exactly match the NSIDC regions, but in the ball park. Tusen takk! @signeaaboe.bsky.social @zacklabe.com @seaice.de cryo.met.no/en/sea-ice-i...

Spiralling global temperatures (1850-2026) It is exactly 10 years since I first put this animated graphic of changes in global temperature online. #ClimateSpiral It instantly went viral. People watched it over and over again. It still offers the power to shock a decade on.

Er nasjonalt månedskort en god idé? En ny utredning er skeptisk, men etter vår mening undervurderer den kraftig de positive effektene av en slik frihetsreform.

Utredning slakter nasjonalt reisekort:

«Etter at billetten er kjøpt, reduseres terskelen for å gjennomføre flere (...) korte, spontane reiser og fritidsreiser som i dag enten ikke gjennomføres eller gjennomføres sjeldnere.»

Eh, ja? Det er jo litt av poenget!

The ice loss of the Greenland Ice Sheet is hard to grasp! This is what the 30 million tonnes of ice that Greenland loses every hour looks like, if it were positioned next to the Eiffel tower before melting:

💧Precipitation in Europe in 2025 showed strong contrasts: northwestern, central & eastern Europe were much drier than average, while southwestern & parts of northeastern Europe were wetter than average. 2025 ranked among the 10 driest in 47 years for northwestern & central Europe. More details ⬇️

Over our 40-year history, Meteosat – Europe’s geostationary weather satellite series – have been the go-to source for imagery of the entire Earth disc over Europe & Africa. One of our first responsibilities was to take ownership of Meteosat-1 and -2 from @esa.int on 1 January 1987. 🧵1/3 #EUMETSAT40
