Exeter claims that our financial situation is dire. Yet in 2023/4 the execs awarded themselves a 12% pay rise, because they couldn't get a bonuses since they hadn't met key performance indicators. I guess if you decimate the faculty, get AI to teach & destroy education, you deserve a raise.

I am very glad to see how widely covered the insanity at Exeter is, but please I beg everyone, understand this is happening EVERYWHERE in UK universities. If people care about anything valuable that this sector does or contributes too, they need to get loud, now.

Something deeply troubling & shocking is happening at Exeter University*, where a mass cull of staff is planned, even though it's in surplus. No good justifications given. @jamesgdyke.info provides the details: www.technosphere.earth/the-bonfire-... *Disclosure: I have a Visiting Fellowship here. +🧵

The bonfire of the humanities

150 academic posts at the University of Exeter are to be cut, most in the humanities but also in social sciences, engineering and environmental sciences

“Demographic Anxieties” can now be preordered (pub date June 30)! It shows how the Israeli settler-colonial state and its borders shape Palestinian women’s reproductive freedom, but it is also an ethnography working through what it means to research Palestine as 1/2 www.ucpress.edu/books/demogr...

My latest article, open access! 'Humanitarianism at the End of (This) World' examines the collapsing liberal world order through a decolonial lens and argues that this is just one end of many ends of worlds, suggesting productive ways forward towards future humanitarianisms doi.org/10.1093/ips/...
