Just doing my best to do my best. Proud Minnesotan, born & bred. Father, husband, programmer (lately Rust, but many years of C and others), handyman, reader, gamer, art & music lover. he/him, but they/them is fine, too.

I like how in the Devil Goes Down to Georgia there isn't even a judge, the Devil is just like 'well absolutely fair kid you are a better fiddle player than me, don't know what I was thinking'

At the center of my message to faculty yesterday was: 1.) We may not be adequately prepared for how angry students are about tech. 2.) They are not all angry for the same reasons. 3.) Being angry at it doesn’t mean they aren’t using it. The sense of entrapment fuels the anger.

For the third year, I’m giving semiannual “state of AI in HigherEd” updates to my fellow faculty. This is a worthy, healthy task, but it feels a little like being the guy with a bucket of boiling oil & a ladle going around the room asking, “Would you like me to melt your face?”

We have so much to thank Canada for - maple syrup - moose - hockey things - Insulin - the pacemaker - basketball - Pvt John A Huff of Ontario, who as a member of the 5th Michigan Cavalry Regiment shot and killed Confederate General JEB Stuart at Yellow Tavern on May 11, 1864

On a bus. Overheard group of white 60ish year old tourists in loud matching outfits talking about RFK Jr and Trump in objective informational ways. Braced myself to hear upsetting misinformation. They paused. “I mean, they’re all so fucking stupid,” one said. The rest nodded.

Another London dispatch: If any of you know any Broadway producers or investors, I am begging you to convince them to transfer "My Neighbor Totoro" to NYC when it closes in London in January. It is one of most enchanting, moving, heartwarming shows I've seen & I want audiences here to experience it🙏

One of the things we have lost is the power to shame public officials. It seems quaint but it is actually very important. Without it, formal law is significantly weaker and our lives are significantly poorer. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/26/u...

A Republican Attack Ad Used a Family’s Tragedy. Now They’re Furious. (Gift Article)

Relatives of a family killed by a semi truck say they were not consulted about the ad, which connected the crash to illegal immigration.

as with so many things this term it speaks to the weakness of his inner circle and Cabinet that they actually let him do this insane bullshit on the daily. November 3rd can't get here soon enough.
