Today we would like to recognize Ken Sample aka Ken Cougar. A Black man who is credited with creating and coining the term "Fursona". While drawing one of his "Exotics" Ken drew a Cougar character that looked strikingly like himself. Attendees of this conference also wanted their own characters!

Looking back at old art is always a trip, you can tell I was trying to make this more illustrative with gradients (usually have to avoid them when animating or exporting to gif for dithering or banding reasons) The harshness of flash really steered me to a “less is more” approach later on 😄

Using Ai as a “reference” sucks because it’s a dead end to learning and curiosity. There are more artists and writers whose work I can be inspired by and I can always dig deeper into them to learn more, but Ai flattens it to the result with no way to find out what parts were stolen from who.
