Sam (31, she/they), author of Sidetracked currently struggling fr weird/queer/INTP/artist/mom/part-time furry my characters haunt me incessantly read my books 👉 linktr.ee/skkelleywrites

I’m trying to decide if I want to add a third POV to To Break A Curse. In part bc the current draft isn’t even 30k words, but also bc I think it would be interesting to explore the magical aspect more and see how badly Tamber panics after realizing she may have accidentally killed someone. 💀

#QueerPrompts 4: Do MCs prefer one close friend or big friend group? Rachel: no real preference Miranda: has a big friend group, doesn’t get too close to anyone due to fear of being Seen but craves it Tamber: weirdly enjoys being disliked but secretly wants a couple close friends

#QueerPrompts 3: Scene or snippet with "friend" or "enemy" here’s an unedited snippet from the end of Rachel’s first actual conversation with the monster she found hiding in a treehouse

I haven't forgotten how nervous I was standing close to those aerial shells when they went off a hundred feet in the air on the opposite side of a cul-de-sac. I'm certain someone would end up in the ER—or dead—if a box of them went off right next to us. ( #WIPSnips from Sunrise )

"You want a sparkler?" I ask James.

He shrugs, so I accept two for each of us. Matthew grabs one, and Cassidy runs off to distribute sparklers to more guests.

"Better light these off over there,
Matthew says, pointing toward the house, away from the launch pad and box of fireworks.

"Good idea."

The image behind the text is a border that is dark blue with gold stars with a black background with neon blue border. An illustrated caticorn holding a pencil and writing in a book with a rose behind one ear is in the lower right corner. A different version of the same illustrated caticorn is curled up writing in the lower left corner

The “best” thing about genAI (the quotes are doing heavy work here) is that it’s really lowered the bar on getting into hand-made art. Literally anything you make is better than ai. There’s never been a better time to throw away your fear and start learning that craft you’ve always wanted to learn.

#QueerPrompts 3: Scene or snippet with "friend" or "enemy" here’s an unedited snippet from the end of Rachel’s first actual conversation with the monster she found hiding in a treehouse

I shrugged. "I have insomnia, and I get bored staring at my ceiling all night. Coming out here sounds way better."

Um..." It turned away, revealing that it had no tail—at least not that I could see. Kind of lame... Then it sighed, shoulders dipping slightly. "Please don't. You shouldn't even know about me."

"No promises," I said.

"Don't come here again." It ducked back into the treehouse and shut the door.

"Bye!"

I was okay with calling it a night, but I did not consider honoring the creature's request for a second. Knowing that there was a weird humanoid being living in the woods not even a mile from my house was insane, and the fact that it didn't seem to mean me any continued harm was exhilarating.

I was determined to befriend that monster if it killed me.

The second I got home, I started writing the next part of my cryptid story.

#QueerPrompts 2: Are your MCs more likely to make friends or enemies? Rachel (autistic lesbian r/NoSleep writer): friends Miranda (closeted bisexual / popular cheerleader who gets turned into a cryptid): depends Tamber (weird mall goth lesbian witch who didn’t think curses were real): enemies

The only *guaranteed* piece of craft advice I can give -- I mean the advice that is universally applicable -- is that if you kill many other writers and eat their scribere gland (roughly the size of a black-eyed pea, so be careful not to damage it) then your prose will improve immensely

I bought a fairly cheap yukata on Amazon, and it came with ties that only work if you wear it right side over left side when it really should be worn left over right, so now I guess I need to swap (or at least remove) the ties before the Obon festival 💀

I used to use the NaNoWriMo website to track my progress while drafting or rewriting. Now, I use pacemaker.press. It’s WAY more customizable than NaNoWriMo’s tracker & can be used for more than just tracking word count on fiction projects, and displays progress as charts or graphs. #PretendPanel
