A huge, huge pet peeve of mine as an intervention scientist is "checklists" or "codes" that just say: "having a problem? Don't" I loathe them. Stuff like, "never get lost, always know where you are" ok like that is not solving the getting lost problem

Avocados come in 2 varieties - A-types start each day female and switch to male midday. B-types do the reverse. In work just published from the last chapter of my PhD, we show this system evolved 40+million yrs ago and is regulated by alleles of 1 transcription factor www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

The point isn't to produce essays, it's to teach students how to think for fuck's sake. The minute you automate that, it's over. You might as well close the course. Which they're also doing. This is an attack on learning, and everyone is just shrugging.

My unpopular science reform opinion is that journal name/reputation SHOULD be a good heuristic for trust/quality, and that’s what we should be trying to achieve.

This is going to require a massive ongoing education effort. Thinking about AI use in research methods is part of my job as academic lead for good research practice, and LLMs are a topic of two of my research strands, and still I can hardly keep up.

Throwaway thought, but it’s wildly unhelpful to use AI as a catch all for everything from transformer-based sequence models to agentic coding assistants to LLM generated docs. I suspect sentiment varies a ton across those and lumping them together doesn’t make for a productive conversation

The centrality of discernment to productive AI usage is obvious, and that's why I find the insistence that AI can be used as a teaching assistant (or worse, a *teacher*) so baffling. By definition, a student *isn't* an expert on the subject they're studying. 44/

All of this has been obvious to me since I first encountered LLM-powered bots. If you understand a subject really well - well enough to discern useful bot output from defective bot output - then bots can be useful. Sometimes very useful, mostly ordinarily useful. 33/
