This alert popped up just as I was writing this post. Everything we can do to minimise climate change and *also* to prepare for the environment of the future is worth it. We don't have to hide, or avoid, or wait for others to act - it's much better for us and the future to change things now.

Text message: "Severe Alert
Issued by the UK Government
now
There is a very high risk of wildfires nationally. Residents, landowners and visitors should not undertake any activity that could start a fire, including disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators or fireworks.
Even a small flame can rapidly develop into a major wildfire placing lives, homes, businesses and emergency responders at risk.
Follow official updates and report signs of fire immediately by calling 999. Search gov.uk/alerts for more information."

Finished my eclipse video. Yellow line is how much the Moon is covering the Sun (%), red line is the "in the sun" temperature, blue line is the shade temperature. Box at top right shows the view of the Sun through a telescope as the eclipse progressed. Times in Universal Time.

I'm still processing the time lapse image data I took of the eclipse yesterday, but here's something a little different. I took the temperature during the eclipse; once sensor in the shade, the other in the Sun. It's not very "V" shaped because it was just before sunset, but I think it's pretty neat

A graph showing the shade temperature (black line) and sun-lit temperature (orange line) during the partial eclipse of 2026 August 12, as viewed from Gloucestershire, UK. The vertical dashed line indicates the moment of maximum eclipse (about 93% coverage).

Eclipse ready here. 1500 visitors expected. The Sun is out (as always at Jodrell of course). I have the 7-metre telescope tracking the Sun and measuring its radio power. Since I last tried this 11 years ago I don't know if it will work. I will share updates.

Selfie in front of Lovell Telescope Graphic radio power versus time from 2pm today looking roughly flat, slightly declining. Jodrell web page with photo of 7-metre telescope and description of how it is used by undergraduates at University of Manchester.
