I got an email today from the Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association which explains why they choose the year 1874 as the est. of the Mill District. As I thought, it is tied to the construction of the first Washburn A mill, the first to produce 1,000 barrels of flour per day.

After reviewing the historical timeline of the Mill District, the Downtown Minneapolis Neighborhood Association selected 1874 as the year to feature on the Mill District banners. While development of the area's waterpower infrastructure began in the 1850s, the canal that made large-scale milling possible was not completed until 1865. Although the Cataract Mill was constructed in 1859, there was not yet a true milling district or sufficient waterpower to support multiple mills. The year 1874 marks the construction of the Washburn Mill, a significant milestone in the development of the Mill District and the beginning of the area's emergence as a major milling center. Historical evidence also suggests that by 1878, multiple mills were operating in the district, as demonstrated by the widespread damage caused by the Washburn Mill explosion. Based on this history, the DMNA determined that 1874 is the most appropriate year to represent the origins of the Mill District on the neighborhood banners.

I find it interesting that 1874 was chosen as the year the Mill District was "established." 1874 is the year the Washburn A mill opened (the one that blew up), but there were 21 mills at the Falls before it including the 1866 Washburn "Big Mill." How was 1874 selected as the date?

Regarding the Timberwolves broadcast news, I'm thrilled that FanDuel and Sinclair won't get any more of my money, but now I have to subscribe to a new streaming app and figure out how to pronounce DAZN. So, it is a mixed bag.

Suicide prevention fencing is finally going up at the U on the Washington Ave bridge over the Mississippi. It will hopefully be done by the start of Fall semester.

New fencing construction on the Washington Ave bridge. So far, they have just removed the old fence and put up a temporary one made mostly of plywood and 2x4s.

Last night after the Royce Lewis walkoff triple, the Twins played Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” as the post game victory song. You wouldn’t think that song would work, but it absolutely did. “How does it feel?!”

FYI! For reasons unclear even to myself I have always wanted to run in the Mascot Race at Target Field. Well, tonight is the night! I will be running in the race at the end of the 4th inning. I have requested to be Louie the Loon. Dreams do come true! Wish me luck!

Did the MyTwins autograph session this afternoon & Ryan Kreidler was one of the two players signing. Obviously I had to ask @snackeru.bsky.social’s question. He said it’s a large number of hats, not comically outsized hats. Didn’t know the number. “Thousands or hundreds?” “Not thousands.”
