Elsa Sjunneson, Order of the Bat

@snarkbat.bsky.social

Author of Being Seen, Sword of the White Horse. Lead Reporter on The Helen Keller Exorcism. Deafblind, Secret Literary Princess, Mom to a Bat, Little Crow and a Kittycorn, and , Takes no Prisoners. All opinions Mine, Relentlessly.

This is just your blanket reminder that preordering books helps authors! Please go preorder DEAR BLIND LADY - I promise, if there’s a question you have about disabled people , I answer it. Yes, even the weird shit like “will disabled people survive a zombie apocalypse”

I am rewatching “Four Weddings and a Funeral” and it’s very interesting to see Deaf Rep done well in a 90s film. I don’t know BSL, but what I appreciate about it is that the non-Deaf woman in the movie takes the initiative and learns the language in order to pursue the Deaf love interest.

Cats out of the bag! I wrote a new thing! Announcement things TK later! Dear BlindLady is the natural successor to Being Seen. So you believe in ableism and now you see how fucked we are? There’s a handbook for that!

I inhaled most of this @snarkbat.bsky.social jawn in one day because as usual Elsa's writing is just soooo smart + wise + kind + fucking funny + yummy-snax readable and THIS IS A BOOK THAT EVERY HUMAN SHOULD READ because it's about how we love each other better? and it's INTERESTING AF so:

Abortion is permitted in Judaism, & it's required if the wellbeing of the pregnant person is at risk. Medication abortion isn’t new, even if it’s taken different forms over the centuries. Access saves lives. It preserves dignity. It honors agency. Access is the path to justice.

The 17th c. Rabbi Yehudah ibn Ayyash of Algiers was asked if women who make a medication known to terminate a child were acting according to jewish law--he replied that they should continue to self-manage their own abortions without interference. ABORTION ACCESS IS A JEWISH VALUE

These numbers are rounding errors to Disney & Netflix. It can’t be cost that’s the concern, they simply don’t want to give an inch to the workers providing key value to their business lest it gives other workers ideas.

In an email, the WGA negotiating committee says its proposals would cost an estimated $429M per year, including $75M to Disney, $68M to Netflix, and $47M to WBD (Gene Maddaus/Variety) Main Link | Mediagazer Permalink
