Just spent some time refining this transcription of a graduate student conversation, using it as an example of how singing can shift topic. I usually don't put the length of silences in like this but a grad student brought it up the other day so I thought I'd try it here, seems relevant

“The satisfaction of having communicated successfully goes beyond the pleasure of being understood in the narrow sense. It is a ratification of one’s place in the world and one’s way of being human.” (Tannen, 1981, p. 145) a quote a student excerpted from tomorrow's class reading :)

I dreamt I was going to audition to be in a performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, & I was like I guess I can do this because I know all the songs. And I was thinking I could audition for both Magenta & Columbia but that maybe I would prefer Magenta because it seemed like she had less makeup

So, what's the etiquette around adding publications "in prep" to a CV? (Obviously in their own section, not with the published stuff!). Does it come across like desperate padding, or can it actually help to indicate you have things in the pipeline?

IMO particle physics is far less practical than nearly every social science, but people act like it’s the opposite. Like, my guy, quarks will never have an effect on your daily life, but you’re going to be involved in multiple stance triangles every day, and you won’t even be aware of them.

I know many of us who were raised by this film now look back on it with complex feelings, but I know that this is what he intended for the film to do, and I’m glad for the people I know whose lives it saved.

"It's given a lot of people permission to be themselves, to not dream it, be it, which is the motto of the movie, really. I would like to be remembered for that." Farewell to Tim Curry (1946-2026) #RIP

Tim Curry and Dolly Parton have taught us not only that you should be bigger, weirder, gayer, and freakier, but also that those qualities are what people will love about you. The things that make you strange and amazing are the things that will resonate with other strange and amazing people

you know what, going back to teaching after a sabbatical has been good so far because actually the students already know that no instructors want to see them on their laptops, with their phones, or using AI. So I had only 1 student in each class today that even had a laptop out at the beginning

I’m proud that my gray hair growout which has probably been in progress for at least 2 years inspired a friend in her 60s to stop dyeing her hair. Lucky for her, she has very short hair so it happened quickly and she has much less gray than I do!
