PSA that Phish introduced the mini-kit in 1995-96 to avoid guitar-led jamming and discarded it when they *solved* that problem in 1997 w/ Trey playing more rhythm (and the funk/groove orientation opened up more space generally). Its return in 2026 was fun but time to move on!
@solargarlicband.bsky.social
I was really hoping that Trey would be wearing the yellow gold shirt from the Clifford Ball and I am so thrilled to see that yes, he is.
Trey does this thing in really hard sections where he plays very quietly/lightly (eg. It's Ice last night). You're not fooling anyone bruh.
I have a hard time understanding how the 1996 show could be at all interesting unless they play a 45 minute "Waste".
The final 10 minutes are the obvious highlight, but there is something so damn cool about the 13 min mark of the Carini jam. Just so damn patient.
@bizarchive.bsky.social so, about last night, has there been a show since 2004 (which contained many, esp 8/9/04 Hampton) in which the 1st set contained a longer version of a song (Wedge last night) than every song in the 2nd set? I don’t believe a first set has ever contained a 28+ min song before

It’s today!
NEW EPISODE! We love 1997, we’ve done 1999, but ‘98 remains elusive. Phish was funky, with searing guitar rock and played unexpected covers. If we distilled 1998 into one show, it may be today’s: @solargarlicband.bsky.social takes a deep dive into 8/1/98 at Alpine. linktr.ee/attendancebias
New episode tomorrow! Matt Huber of the @solargarlicband.bsky.social reminds us of why 1998 was arguably the BEST year of 1.0 as we dive deep into 8/1/98 at Alpine Valley! Available tomorrow wherever you find podcasts!
Really fun to go on "Attendance Bias" to talk about one of the best shows I ever saw in person - 8/1/98. Listen up to hear how the Tweezer became my 'platonic ideal' of what I wanted a Phish jam to sound like for years after.
Matt from @solargarlicband.bsky.social joins me on Wednesday to talk about 8/1/98 at Alpine Valley! 1998 was—maybe?—the best year of 1.0. And it wasn’t all about the cover; crazy jams and fun improv galore! Available Wednesday wherever you get podcasts!
Talked about the years with most 20+ min jams on the episode below (spoiler 1997, 2025) I think 2026 will beat the 41 in 97 and the 40 in 2025. 5 already in Mexico this year. @phish.com @rystorm.bsky.social @viceorvirtuepod.bsky.social @osirispod.bsky.social podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/w...

@hfpod.bsky.social I really need to hear Brian's take on this Ruby Waves jam.
My Phish fandom was forged with my love for my brother, who I lost this past week at the age of 44. I wrote a little something about that. medium.com/@solargarlic...
Loss, Love and Phish
The love of Phish is often shared through relationships with loved ones. For me, that was my younger brother Jeff Huber, who I lost this…

Numbers don’t lie. We’re living in an unprecedented era of massive jams in the @phish.com universe. 🙌🏻
nice! ... I took your computed '# of 20/25 minute jams per show' stat and put into these simple bar plots ... just to help visualize my gosh ... 2021, 2024, and 2025
Absolutely incredible work on my hypothesis about lower avg show gap = better show. Doesn’t totally pan out bc of outliers but does sort of apply to the last five shows of tour. Thank you @past-and-future.bsky.social 🤓 @hfpod.bsky.social @osirispod.bsky.social @rjbee.bsky.social
I was also intrigued by this hypothesis, so I did a quick regression (vertical axis = rating, horiz axis = average gap), definitely no correlation. However, I agree that the average is a misleading stat (for reasons you discussed). The median would be more appropriate, but need to do add'l work.
I love our nerdy listeners. This is incredible. Thank you @solargarlicband.bsky.social @hfpod.bsky.social @osirispod.bsky.social @rjbee.bsky.social
OK, I did something really nerdy with Brian's numbers of 20 and 25 minute jams. Please let him know! 😅 (I also did this *very quickly* because I'm currently slammed, so there might be mistakes). medium.com/@solargarlic...
