The best TTRPG GMs *interpret* the characters as rich texts & agents in of themselves, and then offer NPCs, lore, and fraught situations that play on characters' core themes & traits. GMs are consantly reading both the characters-as-conceived and also the characters-as-played.

A friend asked me what makes a good GM. It’s a personal question as difficult to answer as “what makes good art?” I don’t have the definitive answer, but I do have an answer. A good GM invests in the characters and shows how their actions change the world, e.g @juddthelibrarian.bsky.social

My best advice for any game devs recently laid off is to keep in touch with your closest coworker friends, do a group call at least once a week, share job postings in the chat, hype each other up, and just generally look out for each other.

I just don’t believe video games as a medium are done forever, even if it looks bleak right now. I don’t know what that will look like, and right now I don’t entirely care—I mostly just want everyone to land on their feet as much as they’re able.

Our games industry is people. Our studios are people. Our teams people, our games by people for people. Our games are made by people, in groups of people, in teams of people, making people things for people. The magic is people, and the people deserve so much better than all this. I am so sorry.
