Many states across the country have banned or restricted abortion after a Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade four years ago. Here in Maine, we continue to support access to reproductive rights and the other health services Mainers rely on.

Two of the laws taking effect this week will help ensure food security for Maine families, seniors, and veterans during federal gov't shutdowns and boost pay for direct care workers. Now, Mainers will still be able to get vital SNAP benefits even when politicians in Washington can't work together.

Today, 83 Democratic & Independent Maine lawmakers sent a letter to DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin in response to the ICE shooting of Johan Sebastian Durán Guerrero. We're calling for his agency's continued cooperation with state investigators to provide a full, transparent account of what happened.

Housing doesn't just need to be available – it needs to be affordable for folks at all income levels. You shouldn't have to work 86 hrs/wk to pay your rent or mortgage. We must keep up the progress we've made w/ housing production so everyone can find places to live without breaking their budgets.

Maine minimum wage earners need to work 86 hours a week to afford 2-bedroom apartment

A report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition found that a person would need to make more than $32 an hour to afford the average 2-bed apartment.

Karolina is incredibly brave to come forward and tell us about her husband. Her grief is palpable. Thank you for telling us about Johan, his love for his daughter and you. To honor Karolina's voice, the video is in Spanish, but subtitles are in English.

Today, I met with Gov. Mills, Biddeford Mayor Liam LaFountain, our legislative delegation, and Mufalo Chitam, Executive Director of the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition, who represented Mr. Guerrero's family. We discussed ways to support the family, our neighbors, and our city in the days to come.

Speaker Fecteau stands next to Biddeford Mayor Liam LaFountain and Governor Janet Mills as he responds to inquiries from the press. Senator Henry Ingwersen, Speaker Fecteau, Rep. Traci Gere and Governor Janet Mills sit around a table to discuss the shooting and impact to the community. Senator Henry Ingwersen, MIRC Executive Director Mufalo Chitam, Mayor Liam LaFountain, Rep. DHS has provided inconsistent statements about the ICE-involved shooting in Biddeford. The ME State Police & AG's Office need to be able to conduct a full and transparent investigation with the continued cooperation of federal officials. We need to know why Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero was killed.
