Short-sighted, stupid cuts to the UKRI budget include shutting down Jodrell Bank, the icon of British astronomy. (Many other cuts too, including 20% to our brand new @vrubinobs.bsky.social). Interesting politically to shut down a major facility in...um..Manchester 🔭 www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Jodrell Bank's Lovell telescope faces axe in science cuts, BBC understands

Astronomers warn it would tear the heart out of UK science, and leave a generation untrained.

Hide-and-seek champion award goes to the newly discovered beta Pic d! 🏆 Please welcome the newest member of the exoplanet zoo, and be kind, it’s a little shy, it’s been hiding in direct imaging data for over a decade!

Ten years of hide-and-seek! 🫣 Astronomers used our VLT to find a new #exoplanet orbiting the famous star Beta Pictoris — hiding in archival ESO observations spanning over a decade! And it's shyer than any exoplanet we've imaged before. 🔭 🧪 1/3 📷 ESO/B. Sutlieff, M. Bonse et al.

Image of a star system. The central star is hidden behind a coronagraph, marked by a white star symbol at the centre. A bright companion appears to the left, while a much fainter companion, indicated by a white arrow, is visible to the right against a reddish-orange background.

All these UK cuts to basic science, while the Labour government not only continues £800 million for ARIA's broken funding model (including actively harmful engineering development for geoengineering deployment) but also gave them another £200 million. Disgraceful, and performative.

Heading to London for the next few days to attend the UK HWO meeting held at UCL. Pretty damn worried about the heat! This is not normal and is not okay. What we are seeing in the UK is just the start of extreme weather due to climate change. It will be worse in El Niño years like 2026.

I am here at Glastonbury Abby to talk on BBC Radio 3 about the Solstice 🌅 you can join around 9:20 when the North Pole is pointed the most towards the sun. As well as hearing some fun facts about the solstice on other planets. #science #solstice
