Whenever I hear people saying that figures who were vile in public, and actively made life worse for other people through their actions or words, were kind in private, I think that they should have applied themselves to greater consistency across all areas of their lives.

Once again I find myself noting an obituary with a quiet nod.

this convo just reminded me of the time my youngest got accidentally sorted into the lowest English set on starting secondary school. After about 20 mins, he apparently went up to the teacher and said "I'm really quite perplexed as to why I'm in this class. This isn't very taxing at all".

One reason I'm so opposed to early selection is it means the sorting process is essentially done in advance by teachers/parents and so kids aren't even given a chance on the route that leads to the high status and well paid jobs.

Jokes aside, I see people go "I think I'm trans but I'm not gonna address it because of all the difficult stuff, what would I get out of it?" And the answer is true joy. Notably Reform only got just over half the second prefs from Tories and Restore. Labour got almost three quarters of second prefs from Greens/Libs. Right more split than left.

I once sat opposite John Cleese in an audiologist’s waiting room. My phone ringtone is a clip of him and Palin doing Gumby voices, and he looked so bad-tempered I was terrified it would ring and he would threaten me.

A lot of men in my feed are criticising Emily Wilson’s review, and a lot of women are praising it. This could very well be coincidental, but as I’ve neither seen the film nor read the review, it would be foolish for me to draw conclusions. It’s just something that struck me.

I’ve been to Nevis. It’s lovely. Why the poor people there have to put up with this sod is beyond me. The good news is that Nevis is a long, long way from anywhere else, so let’s hope he spends a lot of time there.

I haven’t seen The Odyssey yet - I tend to avoid blockbusters, at least at the time of release - so I can’t really comment on the LRB review. But I do think Emily Wilson is correct on one point: Nolan does do a better job where his focus is tight.

I don’t remember when I first came to the Goodies, but my dad was a massive Python/ISIRTA fan, so he was probably immediately drawn to the names Brooke-Taylor, Oddie and Garden. I think he enjoyed the programmes as much as I did.

It says a lot about the current predicament that (theoretically) going into an election polling at 28% inspires confidence. (Obviously Burnham wouldn’t actually call an election unless that figure was well into the 30s. But even that, by historical standards, is extraordinary.)
