Recently read Our Little Wild Time by @frednoland.bsky.social & from @fantagraphics.bsky.social. It’s a collection of profane, funny, grotesque, and frenetic short stories. I love how he draws faces and expressions, as well as how he telegraphs action and punchlines. These are some great comics!

More recent comics I have loved: Front End Loader by @bretthamil.bsky.social. This trio of short stories ranges from “How Burl Became a Taoist,” with a punchline that made me LOL, “Goblin,” a relationship story about a strange-shaped penis, to “Lady Stetson,” a longer comic about nostalgia and love.

Cover to Front End Loader by Brett Hamil. It shows two young children wearing rumpled clothes, as if they recently fought. Behind each is a stern father type, making sure they shake hands. The title of the book is situated in the bucket of a front end loader.

Recent comics I have loved: Gavin Mackie’s Hunting for Gooblets issue 1. It’s the start of a series, with four chapters of intrepid explorers in a strange land filled with even stranger creatures. It’s a lot of fun and I am looking forward to issue 2!

Cover to Hunting for Gooblets #1 by Gavin Macie. It shows an explorer stepping through a square panel. They are wearing shorts, a t-shirt, a backpack, and hiking boots. They are among three Gooblets, which are short, two-toed creatures with a single tooth and two googly eyes. They resemble a cross between mushrooms and Fisher Price Little People.

Have you read Dogs on Dates by @lukehealy.bsky.social yet? It’s a sweet, charming, life-affirming, funny, and moving book about a couple of gay anthropomorphic dogs. Some of their dates are mundane, some disastrous, and others wild. One of the best comics I’ve read this, or any, year!

Recently borrowed Calamity Before Jane by Noah Van Sciver from my local library. It’s a well-sourced history book for younger readers that deflates myths about the “old west.” It reflects how tough and unglamorous life was back then and does not shy away from Jane being a teller of tall tales.
